[Closed] Are discs allowed in road races?

I already own a disc braked road bike and want to start racing, but can't seem to find any definite answers to the issue of disc brakes. Are the rules and regulations somewhere? I know the UCI have allowed the in CX, but not on the road, but don't really know who they are or how many races they control and so on.

Check with whoever organises your local races - or indeed the races you wish to ride.

no, but at the level you will be racing can't hurt to ask the organiser what there intepretation of the rules is. ie strict or not.

Briefly the UCI control the sport, British Cycling control cycle sport in the UK, they can choose to impliment the rules if they so wish, but any top level race will be run under UCI rules, lower down they may be laxer. But don't bet on it.

AFAIK BC implement UCI bike regs. A Surrey League race will be under BC rules. Hence you might get away with it if they're being relaxed, but I suspect it's unlikely - not given the potential liability.

No they're not.
And that's from the UCI and British Cycling. There is no leeway where races "may be laxer".

Discs aren't allowed in road races but they are allowed in CX.

What about TLI races? They are separate from UCI / British Cycling.

Do you still have to put insulation tape over the brand name on your shoes and turn your jersey inside out if it has a sponsers' logo on it that you're not entitled to wear? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Will anyone care if you don't win by a considerable margin?

Not allowed, but expect that to change pretty soon. Withing the next year or two at the most.

Yes - because it's a potential safety issue. It's a long time since I did road races, but I doubt things have got slacker - back then there was a list of safety related issues they were supposed to check on every bike, and you used to get at least a perfunctory check most of the time.

Really? What do you think the motivation for any change would be?

There's a related safety issue? You brake too well for the people behind to cope with?

Big brand marketing and selling new bikes to everyone.

I stand corrected then, I thought they were allowed but no one was bothering.

Red hot? On a road bike in surrey? Where are these alpine like descents?

You've not seen the average 4th Cat racer descending, have you? ๐Ÿ˜‰
Panic braking and brake dragging galore...

OK, the reason they're not allowed is they are a "technical innovation" and the UCI have to approve every technical innovation before it's allowed. The fact that they've approved discs for use in CX apparently bears no relevance to their use in road so for the moment, discs are banned. no ifs, buts or maybes, they're banned.

However, they are in discussions about allowing them - that will of course impact on all the Tech Regs, the rules and the much wider issue of attempting to get some sort of standard agreed with manufacturers and OK'd by the UCI since the UCI have a stranglehold on frame design and limitations and weight and all sorts of other aspects of what forms a "traditional" road bike.

Very few manufacturers have a disc braked road bike in their range at the moment (partly because of the delay with getting it OK'd by the UCI) but expect that to change once the UCI agree it. In the meantime, by all means buy a disc braked road bike but don't expect to be able to race it...

Would SRAM invest big bucks in making a hydraulic group set if they didn't think they would be on road bikes soon?
