Chris just sent me a photo of the frame you’re doing for him, looks fantastic. I’ve sent you a message on Instagram about a couple of frames I’d like painting if possible.

Good stuff.

I keep toying with having my 2020 Norco optic spray. just a solid colour with black graphics.

What sort of money would I be looking at? And I assume you will want to receive a frame fully stripped down? bearings removed?

Interested in this when OP gets up and running properly. I've got two frames that could do with a makeover.

I can’t see myself doing this full time to be honest as I’ve just taken on a new 9 to 5 job. I was just thinking about doing maybe 2 or 3 jobs a month mainly cause I love doing it and love bikes. Not really in it to make loads of cash out of people.

I'm building up a bike for my eldest son, I was planning to rattle can it but a slick paint job would be awesome.
It's just an alloy hardtail Specialized, nothing fancy.
Happy to post and cover costs etc if you have availability for it 😁

i'll pm you if i get the nod from richard. As hes just starting out he may not have worked out a proper pricing structure yet and id hate to have him feel committed to price-matching and the like.....
it wasnt just the painting, he also spent time experimenting for me with decals and dealing with my indecision 😀 he really went out of his way for me. top bloke and top work.

cheers

I'm not remotely interested in having a bike repainted, but I love this threead.

UK resident has some skills and uses them to do constructive stuff and make loads of people happy.

Excellent stuff🤗🤗

This is mint. I have an old 26" Rocket in the loft that I'm planning on building up again next year, if you get a free slot any time.

That does look good!

I don't do insta sorry so can't see the cervelo to tell but I'm assuming it's carbon? Do you strip the existing paint or does it need doing before (or do you just prime over it?)

If you get off the ground as a longer term thing I'd be interested in getting my evil done, mainly as the original paint comes off in response to do much as a disdainful glance so it's got some big flakes missing. Would be nice not to notice them so often but I think it'd likely need stripping back to raw to get rid of the blemishes.

Dangeroubrian yeah the cervelo is carbon. I’ve sanded back 90 percent of the original paint now it’s ready for primer then I can start the colour scheme

Richard is a top bloke. This was his first project in this thread...
Family commitments has slowed the build but in the sunshine it really sparkles.
Cheers dude

Better view of the colour shift:

How do those colour shift/flip paint jobs work?

Do you buy one paint that has the colours in or is it a spray technique that allows you to choose the two colours?

I'm planning a ti gravel bike build and thinking I'd like it to be a homage to my old team Marin which was grey zolatone frame with neon magenta bars/stem/forks. Could you do a neon magenta that flips to something else?

Richard is the expert here but I think he put a black base coat down then used a colour shift Pearl mixed within a clear top coat. The colour shift pigment was pre-mixed so colours defined. I’m sure there must be custom pigment stockists who can mix a desired colour combo maybe?

Cjr61 is right. It’s some sort of magical wizardry type of pigment that goes over a different ground coat. The flips are just the pigments. But there is plenty to choose from that flip from and to different colours. Can get two or three colour flips I think.

https://perfectpearlsandpigments.co.uk/ Have a good selection of flips and paints etc

Thanks for the link. There are some lovely colours in there. I'm sure I'll end up in analysis paralysis.

I'm interested in the process of doing this as I've got a couple of bikes I want to experiment with. I've got the space to do it and a 50 litre compressor but nothing else yet.

What kind of paint so you use? Is there any issues with using it at home, like health hazards etc? Do you finish them with a clear lacquer? Any recommendations for suppliers?

Can I just buy a gun from Machine Mart and crack on?

How much sanding is involved? Do you use any power tools?

For my DJ bike I was thinking of a messy, multi coloured, rattle can job using vinyl masking for sharp logos. But then I'd want a slick, glossy finish so it looks pro rather than poo.

Sharkattack I use two pack clearcoat which is isocyanate based so it’s not very good stuff to be breathing in. Also use etch primer. Solvent base coat and different primers. I wouldn’t recommend breathing any of it in !

There is LOTS of sanding involved. A small mini spray gun should run of a 50 litre compressor
