I'm thinking of getting some to build a lightweight set of wheels for general trail riding and would appreciate any feedback....
Are they better/worse than 717s in terms of strength as I think they're slightly lighter?
Would they work ok with 2.2/2.3 tyres or would 2.1s be more like it?
Is there a cheaper option to running them tubed & tubeless aside from the rims strips etc?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

I'm sure you can go wider than the 717s.

Mavic states the max width is 2.1.

I use olympics, no problems after 3 years, I'm not heavy on kit but have totalled 717's accidentally in the past. I've put Schwalbe 2.4's on them - at high pressure though.

Is there a cheaper option to running them tubed & tubeless aside from the rims strips etc?

I'm not sure what you mean - I've used gaffa tape to seal though.

i've used them for about 18 months now - brilliant rims

I use 2.0/2.1's on them but I think 2.2's would be fine

Yeah I'm a bit confused as to what rim tapes etc you need to fit to run them with tubes and could I do the bmx innertube thing for tubeless?

Good news re the tyre size thanks cynic-al

I should add one blew off once when I landed a jump squint - though that might well have happened to any tyre in the circumstances.

You could use any rim tape to run with tubes. They supply a rubber strip that is like a bmx tube but it does not extend above the bed of the rim and so I don't know if a bmx tube solution would work.

The idea of the rim strip is to "bulk out" the rim for use with "loose" tyres. I find a strip of door sealant works well sealing the tyre for inflation (but makes it tight to remove)

I've used Olympics for 2 years with 2.25 schwalbes fine but as above I've had a couple 'blow off' I'm using the no tubes 355 rim now as it's a little wider to give a better tyre profile and is approx the same weight.

The Olympics run tubeless with the normal yellow rim strip and the appropriate valve. No 'tubeless kit' is needed as such.

You can use any tyre you fancy with a bit of sealant which also protects very well against thorn punctures.

Stan's rims are brilliant. Never bothered with tubes after day 1. I was suprised how easy tubeless is with these rims and oh so light.
