(Still) looking at Hope cranks, but possibly not the BB due to budget restrictions lol

Anyone running Hope cranks with another 30mm BB?

Can get the Uberbike one for £25.....

Any issues?

Have used Nukeproof and Rotor ones, both fitted fine but they didn't last as well as Hope ( the nukeproof was spectacularly bad, one wet day killed it)

I find that the Hope bottom bracket bearings last forever. My opinion is that this is not down to bearing quality rather that the bottom bracket cups have a little groove in them into which an external seal fits which reduces water and mud ingress and prolongs bearing life

I’ve found the 30mm Hope BBs nowhere near as good as their 24mm ones. Last one I had lasted 6 months before the NDS bearing seized.

I also didn’t like the cranks themselves. Need for special tools to change rings was annoying and I found they creaked and clicked when they got the slightest bit dirty. Took them off the bike they came on and replaced with GX and pocketed the difference.

Need for special tools to change rings

Annoying but not uncommon, Shimano do the same 😥.

I think one of my Hope BB's is about 8 years old and it's never made a peep. I can't say that about much else.

The old cranks were a bit of a PITA with all the tools and the nonsensical fitting and removal procedure but even then the tools were supplied with the cranks.

The Evo cranks are more refined. Mine are stiff and silent. No complaints at all.

Chiggle were pumping out RaceFace BB30s (or whatever they're called) for a tenner or so during the firesale. I stuck one on my Cascade to fit some secondhand Hope EVO cranks that didn't come with a BB. Two years and a lot of use later they still feel as good as new.

I know. RaceFace bearings. I'm as shocked as anyone 😀

Hope cranks look lovely… but another option may be Pinnd.  I just put a set on a friend’s bike and they seem really good.  They look nicer in the ‘the flesh’ than the photos.  Made in Scotland, Dub BB so you can use cheap ones or posh ones like the Endura all in one BB. And cranks use three bolt SRAM chain rings. https://www.pinnd.co.uk/products/analog-cranks

I got one of the double row ones, still in there and going strong! Also running it with hope cranks.

Thanks for posting this, I need some shorter cranks for the new eeb I've purchased, this company looks banger.

Don't get this, they supply the tool (just one) with the crank. What's the issue?

I found they creaked and clicked when they got the slightest bit dirty. .

Only had that when I fitted a Burgtec ring, think the tolerances were off, it creaked no matter what. Zero issues on three sets when fitted with hope rings and greased properly.

Sram, torx bolts done up at a sensible torque.

Hope, special tool which needs a big spanner to tighten or undo. Needs one hand to hold the crank, leaving only one hand on the spanner, resulting in the tool jumping off the lock ring unless you have it completely flat. I found it very awkward to apply enough force to get the lock ring to stay tight. Had I’ve come loose mid ride, even with thread lock.

Crank arms are beautiful and I love the 155mm E bike ones, but the chain ring interface is just over complicated for no real benefit. I honestly can’t see the benefit over SRAM.

Glad you’re happy with your’s but I’m just presenting a balanced view, as a previous owner of the originals and evos.

Always used a BB tool rather than a spanner. never had issues. You can clamp the tool in a vice too, makes it easy. The old ones were a pain, for sure.

The tool does fit lovely in a vice. Probably why I don't remember having any trouble with it.

That’s my point. Needs a vice to fit a chainring, when the SRAM I have needs 3 torx bolts.

Serial Hope BB user here and they're ace. Think the ceramic one on my old Alpine must be 9+ years old now and still sweet, the 30mm one on my Five is over 2 years old and still spinning sweet... I'll be getting one for my Switch when Unite bring out their revised cranks (BTW OP - thats what I'd do instead of the Hope cranks - the Unites are excellent bits of kit and loads cheaper than Hopes so can budget a long lasting Hope BB into the mix).

If you are on a budget I would go for Hope bottom bracket and cheaper cranks.

if you can stretch your budget go for Hope both - it will be cheaper in the long run
