Heading to friston forest (nr Eastbourne) next week on the reccommendation of an unnamed magazine, Just wondered if anyone has any up to date info on conditions - muddy, dry , sticky? Also is there a visitors centre?

Thanks for your help

1st post. Been a lurker for a while but thought it rude not to answer a question i might just be able to.

Was in the forest last week and it was nigh on perfect. Had a deluge here last night so trails might have suffered a bit. I am going for a spin this arvo so will report back if it's bad. Sure it'll be alright though.

Here's a link to streetmap

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=551500&y=99500&z=120&sv=exceat&st=3&tl=Map+of+Exceat,+East+Sussex+ [City/Town/Village]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

There's a bike hire shop, loos, tea room just where the 'V' is next to place name Exceat.

It's not a big area. Depending on how long you are planning to be there i'd be tempted to head to say Alfriston if you want food/drink and change of scenery.

Anything else I can help with just ask.

I was riding in the general area last weekend, around Berwick and surrounding. It's likely to be muddy, but then isn't everywhere this time of year. I'd say just ride it, you're going to get a bit muddy. 🙂

Awesome, thanks guys, the van is packed. It was more to save a wasted journey if it was totally unrideable, like you say everywhere is muddy, it's the depth that changes.

Thanks especially wait4me, massive help there

Friston Forest can be a right mix of everything, in the low flat areas it can be muddy and boggy enough to bring the bike to a halt, there's slippery chalk tracks, fast gravel roads, great singletrack and loose steep downhills where a touch of the brakes will have your rear wheel passing by in a jack-knife scenario ... all great fun, and that was last summer!

The 'V' on the map above is, I think, for visitors centre, there's a car park just behind it, turn onto that yellow road and go in the first car park you see - it's not marked on that map, you have to pay in the car parks though, was about £2 for the day last time I looked? From that car park in the top right corner there's some tracks that go up almost parrallel to the A259, again they're not on that map, but you'll find some interesting downhill bits further on, basically any track that looks like it's rideable you can go on ... enjoy!

Went over to forest yesterday. It is muddy in places, but by and large looks pretty good. Doesn't look like much more rain on the way so I'm sure you'll have a great time.

As above poster says just point down any likely looking track. The waymarked red route is good place to start and from there you'll spy plenty of likely detours.

If you are new to the area it's well worth a quick ride down to the coast on the path from the visitors centre. Some of South Coast finest views and a very pleasant place to eat a butty.

cheers guys, had a good blast today, red route was sticky an slippy in places but some of the cheekier trails were great.

Thanks for your help
