Niner made a prototype using frame sections from their full sus RIP 9 frame, to produce a "hardcore" 29er.
it got a few mentions last year,

just wondering if anyone knows whether they're on their way?
Ever since reading Dr Jon's blog, i've been into to the idea of trying a 29er with short chainstays and a decent travel up front....

Not heard any more about that one, but Canfield Yelli Screamy and Nimble 9, Mythic/Banshee Paradox, Kona Honzo etc all fit the bill.
