ours doesn't freeze any more. It's about 15 years old, so not worth spending any money on, but does anyone know if there are any simple ways to work out what may have gone wrong and possible easy fixes before I run off to the slow painful death that is Currys?

Try and find a second hand one, there are almost no moving parts, so if the compressor and seal are OK you should be able to pick up a bargain.
