I'm talking about the really heavy duty ones costing £80 or more. Sure there are Youtube vids showing people cracking them with massive bolt cutters or angle grinders but I'm interested to know if anyone has been a victim of this on their own property e.g. garage /shed etc?
My insurance replacements will arrive shortly and needless to sayI'm planning more robust options for the future
yes yes and yes - did i say yes ?
i know folk who have been victims with their OWN POWER TOOLS ! - i keep mine under lock and key and in a different outbuilding to my bikes for this reason.
Get an Almax chain, their padlock and a ground anchor.
Does not stop them cutting your frames, but at least it is the ultimate chain-based deterent.
I appreciate this does not address the security of the room, but that becomes a little more 'bespoke'.
PaulD
Yes. Frame was cut instead.
not sure what your budget is but one of these with bikes padlocked to a ground anhcor that couldn;t be reached with power tools would be my choice if I were worried;
http://www.allpark.co.uk/cycle-cages-and-compounds/horizontal-bike-cage.html
use a u-lock to hold it closed and they have to cut through the cage before they can even start on the bike locks etc.
If they really want to get your bike/s they will. All you're security will do is slow them down or possibly deter the less eager. I had 5.5k worth of bikes stolen from my garage earlier this year. The bikes were insured and im still dealing with the insurance tossers now......still dragging out the claim!!
In the mean time I put in a ground anchor, got myself a very meaty mammoth bike chain, a garage alarm and drilled, the runners on my garage doors and put padlocks in the holes and purchased a 4 ft wrecking bar that lives by the side of my bed.
I bought myself a cheapish hack in the meantime so I can carry on riding that now lives in the garage with all the additional security.
Last week in the early hours i hear my garage alarm go off so i woke up, told the missus to phone the police and I ran to the garage with my wrecking bar. When i got there my garage door was totalled and 2 scrotes were setting to work with an angle grinder on my bike chain. So after a bit of a stand off and me informing the scrotes that at least one of us was going to hospital and then my missus finally talking me down to not do anything stupid the little scrotes escaped out the side door and disappeared.
15 mins later the Police arrived and then told me that i could have been nicked for threanting behaviour and sporting an offensive weapon.
The chain had suffered some damage but generally held up well but if i hadnt been at home im confident they would have taken my bike.
Lesson learned 888trojan888 ? Next time don't call the cops. Just batter the scrotes!
Jesus that's a sobering tale 😯 Had 5k worth of bikes nicked out of my garage 6 weeks ago and have since fitted electric gates to house and extended house alarm to the garage. My missus said that was unneccessary and that I was overreacting.....
Sounds not based on the above!!
There are supposedly uncropable chains, but nothing will stop an angle grinder and enough blades.
I agree with alarming your shed/garage. I also have cheap CCTV setup with signs on the outside of the fence that they would have to climb over. I have just ordered one of these GPS trackers that I am going to put on my most expensive bike as they will probably go for this first. Bike insurance is getting a joke now £500 pa so wondering if this GPS tracker might be a good substitute. I also find when bikes have been nicked in the past that unless they are under 1 year old the insurance companies just pay out bugger all or find every loop hole under the sun. Also if you of claim it just puts your contents insurance up and stops you moving insurer for 5 years.

Hide her iron !,then tell her it nust have been stolen, see if shes over reacting then !!,women eh ...
if they cant get through the chain they'll just cut the frame.....
If your not at home when the bike thief turns up, then its all about how much time they have,
1 x Crowbar, 1 x makita cordless angle grinder, a medium pair of bolt cutters, and 2 metal hacksaws, all fit very nicely into a JD sports bag.
I know this, as thats what was left in my garden when I rumbled 2 scumbags a few weeks ago.
The Best thing i can recommend to protect you bikes ,after the usual chains and ground anchors is a wireless baby monitor,
You can get a 350m range set for £50 of ebay, set it up just behind the garage door, and if your at home when the scum strike, they don't even get chance to smash your padlocks off, let alone nick your bike.
Amazing sensitivity and they take batteries as well.
Yes, £80 is nowhere near enough to get a secure chain, but the padlock will be more vulnerable to attack. i had a decent M/Bike chain/ground anchor and lock, but the padlock was snipped easily.
Upgraded to Pragmasis and custom squire lock and anchor, then alarmed the garage to the house. Heavy but very secure. Similar to Almax, I liked the Pragmasis product with ground anchor better.
I agree with hide your power tools too!
888trojan888......so whats the next course of action if all the above (nearly)failed. It seems that no matter what extent you secure your bikes if the ****ts want them they will get them. I dont know how you kept calm enough not to batter them in your garage......good job you listened to Mrs888 though.
I'm relatively lucky in that I live in quiet area, 30 houses in total where all neighbours know each other, an area where nobody has any need to pass through so if there is a 'stranger' in the road he/she is very noticable. My bikes are kept in the house under the stairs with pedals removed, handlebars loosened and front wheel not bolted through.......unrideable in other words. I suppose if the thief had transport they could throw disassembled bike in car/van (which neighbours would have probably taken the reg of!)but if they tried to ride away I would hopefully be picking their teeth up off the road where front where came off.
The ultimate answer must be to keep bikes where they cannot be found. A cellar under the garage with a trapdoor hidden under carpet/lino.
Rig this up to a massive water tank that floods the cellar if the door is opened without cancelling the alarm.
I'd like to see a thief cut through a lock in the dark under 8ft of water...
Im probably going to have to keep them in the house. Dealing with the insurance people has been a nightmare and the Police has been generally crap (they didnt even turn up on the first time) and they seemed more interested in giving me a bollocking for threatening them.
I will also not keep as many bikes as it is to pricey to insure espically when they put my premiums up next year.
Failing that i will probably just think f@*k it and just get busy with the wrecking bar and take my chances with the trusty British Courts 😉
I usually just compost any burglars I catch. Tomato plants are looking great this year... 😉

Do they have a firm fleshy texture and a meaty flavour?
Re threatening the toerags. Could you not have kept one (mabe padlocked them up) and wait for the Rozzers?
My dads best buddy had his Harley Davidson v rod stollen from his garage when they first cme out! But the thing was they cut through his ground anchor shackle and then DRAGGED THE MOTORBIKE OVER THE TOP OF HIS PORCHE ( midlife crisis car & bike I know ) he was out and didn't know until he opened his garage door !
So his ( frankly BRILLIANT) solution was to get hold of a skip, get some spider type legs welded to it to act as grip, and then sink it into his garage floor and concrete it in place. When you opened up the flap/ door you rolled the bike in, and secured it to the massive anchor points he had welded into the side and bottom of the skip, and then fitted this bar type thing around the bike, again locking it in place, then locked the flap dead bolts in place. Massive overkill, but worked.
Funnily enough he didn't have it nicked again, they did come back but took the porche ! Oops
The skip idea was I think genius 😀
First thing alot of people in this area do when meeting these types is get a picture on your phone,(particularly those itinerant tinkers) may infringe their civil rights blah blah but they dont like being imaged and a few posted on here would be a great help in IDing these lowlifes, better than pictures of ya bike in my opinion. Just out of interest what areas are you in Trojan Woody Thumbs 'banker-local to each other or country wide? My security choice is a big **** ugly Rottweiler-scares the crap out of any body on the premises but even that is not proof against determined scummers.
My security choice is a big **** ugly Rottweiler-scares the crap out of any body on the premises but even that is not proof against determined scummers,
think i married one of these!
think scum are just getting more brazen nowadays they know cops wont do anything(sorry to any cops reading this). two hoodies rode into my sons school on knackered bike out came bolt cutters one specialized dirt jumper and a bmx thingy gone. middle of day on cctv in front of school office/main entrance probably never to be seen again, not expensive bikes but might be priceless to a schoolkid
next the the police start taking nonsense - the simple response is "they attacked me with their tools when I disturbed them, therefore I used reasonable force to defend myself"
And when it means protecting your family/home/bikes, reasonable force = a good ****ing battering
It's the only language scum understand
Whats peoples views on Smar****er as a deterrent?
OK I know its not a physical barrier & I suppose it depends if the criminal actual knows what it is on seeing the warning stickers.
15 mins later the Police arrived and then told me that i could have been nicked for threanting behaviour and sporting an offensive weapon.
An astonishing reflecting of today's society, no doubt the scrotes would have sued you as well.....
1min30s with an angle grinder....
I'm about to put a new side door on my garage. Normall opens inwards but going to put brick returns on the door way & have the frame inset so it opens outwards. Thinking that being recessed in might prevent it being levered open.
There are supposedly uncropable chains, but nothing will stop an angle grinder and enough blades.
councils (like westminster) use a little oxy/acetylene set to remove abandoned bikes - quicker and quieter than disc cutter.
smar****er has got to be a good idea.
I think by far the best protection is to run a high voltage of electricity into the ground anchor and around the chain. you can also do this through your metal garage door. Make sure that the switch is inside your house. This should put them off.
Baby monitor sounds like a very good idea.
I have just ordered one of these GPS trackers
Woody, can you expand on this?
