Shimano do a Deore level one that weighs a metric ton.

Yep you'll go backwards with that thing on, may as well fit an anchor.

you could wind your back tyre off with that ration on a 22T!

Really, a 36T int peak? I'd stick with a 32T and just wait til you have the funds to go 10spd.

indeed better off that way; I had heard of a company in US IRD Elite that does 11/32 Campag cassettes may be they do wider range 9 speed Shimano fit too?

No, I was taking the piss out of Luke.

You won't notice any difference.

Shimano do a Deore HG61 12-36t 9spd cassette. They don't do a 9spd 11-36t cassette IIRC?

The range on the 12-36t casette (3.0:1) is actually slightly less than that of a 11-34t cassette (3.1:1) so if you've already got the latter, just use a 34t chainring instead.

You can fit an 11T sprocket onto the 12-36 with minimum effort apparently. Pretty obivous that the only reason there's no 11-36 for 9 speed is to try and get people onto 10 speed IMO.

I could be wrong but that Hope freehub-o-cassette thing might be coming in a 9-34 for 9-speed.

At one of the bike shows this year there was someone showing a retrofittable 36t sprocket. The idea was that you lost the smallest cog on your 9 speed cassette and added in the 36t one. Not sure who was showing it or where you'd get one from.

I still don't quite understand people using 1x9 set ups with a 36t front though.

What exactly is the benefit of 36t front versus say 32t or 34t?

"You can fit an 11T sprocket onto the 12-36 with minimum effort apparently"
You'd end up with a bit more of jump between 8 and 9 is all
You'd end up with 11-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36T IIRC

"What exactly is the benefit of 36t front versus say 32t or 34t?"
If you can keep an 11T on the casette, you get a faster gear
More teeth on the chainring will wear less quickly
I bought a 34T for mine because it was cheaper than a 32T, and 32-11T was too spinny on the road too often for me

LOLs. 36T was where it was at in before 1993. With 11-28 cassettes of course.

Losers!

Yes that I can see, but I still can't see the point of a bigger than 32x34 for riding trails.

At 15.5 stone I'd call most people fat. I suspect you'll now say it's muscle, but your 50% heavier than me, ergo I think you're fat. ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd have thought the jumps in an 11-36 9 speed would be annoyingly big, would stick with 11-34 myself.

Al - I assume thats a pisstake

- 34 / 34 and 36 / 36 are the same gear ratio - 1:1

I recently went 1x10 speed with mostly slx and an xt shifter (32tooth up front), one thing I would say is that the slx cassette is very heavy, probably not that far off the 12-36 9 speed. Would recommend it though, all the gears you are likely to need for general riding

I use every gear on my 22/36 11/34 2x9 set up offroad. Crawler gears for hills and spin out at 25 mph which is fast enough for me

At the moment i have 24/36 up front and an 11-32 cassette

I use the top 3 on the cassette on the 22t granny and the rest on the 36.

My reckoning was an 11-36 cassette and either a 34 or 36t single ring would be all the gears i would need, am i wrong with my calcs?

If you want the equivalent of 24/32 using a 32 chainring you'd need a 43T cog

I don't use all the gears on any of my bikes bar the singlespeed. Should I re evaluate my gear ratio choice?

I run 36t up front to a 7 speed 14-32 (11-32 9 speed with the 2 smaller cogs removed for better chainline).

I don't need or want for anymore gears, and I ride the Peaks on a regular basis. But then I've ridden singlespeed for years so my riding style is more suited to stomping my way through.

Maybe you have a 3rd pedal for your willy to help on the tricky bits?

I take it you've put a spacer behind the largest cog?

Why bother?

You clearly have the gears you need, and if you ever ride anywhere else you'll have extra options.
