Mine have a lot of play so I've taken the axle unit out. Do I just tighten the lock nut at the end or have I got to open up and re-grease the ball bearings?

Just loosen the lock nut and take out the play with the nut below. then tighten the lock nut up against the nut below. put a good dollup of grease in the pedal body and tighten up. This will push all the dirty grease out the end and the new grease will be sitting round your bearings.

More than likely you need to return them for warranty replacement!
