Looking at an alternative way of maintaining riding through winter (yes yes mud etc man up n all that blah blah) like the idea of a bit of road work/commute, i dont really like the idea of a full on road bike. So thought the Boardman Performance Hybrid range may suit, any owners on here with opinions? . Halfords have them very well priced at £499 less another £60 off on offer so £440.

Other bike i have looked at breifly is the Giant Rapid range at around £400.

I have one - the basic model from 2010.
I took the cable brakes off and replaced them with some old Hope Mini's but apart from that it's still as stock.

Firstly, it's somewhat on the heavy side for a roadbike but what do you expect at that price point. The gearing (on mine at least) is more aimed towards commuting rather than full-on road stuff with a compact 50-36 up front and a SRAM mtb 11-32 cassette on the rear, having said that for where i live it's ideal - great for climbimg without killing you.
The ride position is comfy, pretty low for a flat barred set up but not a heads down/arse up position like a drop bar set up.
Rolls well, a longish top tube so quite roomy.
I did the C2C in a day on mine and it wasn't trying to cut me in half by the end 🙂
It's a good bike for long-distance cruising and i think it would make a great touring bike if you're that way inclined.
It's not and never will be a full on road race bike but i don't want one of those (hate drops as well).
For that sort of money i'd snap it up - it's a great bike.

Put it this way, i own a 2004 Mount Vision, and last year i bought the Boardman and a Marin Wolf Ridge as well - the Boardman was the bike that gave me the most smiles per miles as i discovered the joys of simply riding off to visit somewhere.
A 100 mile round trip for fish and chips was a good reason for a spin out this year 🙂

Buy it.

I've got the model reviewed here (clicky) and I love it. The review sums it up very well.
