if i bought a sram-x9 front derailleur would this work as the shimano one is getting a bit on the dying side anyway ? thx
I think they are mostly compatible items, so can be mix-n-match .....
because sram front mechs are gash.
So are SRAM rear mechs. And shifters.
The question you should be asking yourself Chris is why don't I replace the SRAM with XT/SLX.
is it not a bb mounted mech?
don't know if sram make them.
believe they used this mounting because they foul the swing arm otherwise. used to have a prophet but let the LBS take care of all that stuff at the time.
yes del i think it is mounted to do the BB thats why i was thinking how am i supposed to change this? lol , can i not get one thats not mounted? or does it have to be the same kinda mech ?
i 'think' you have to have the bb mounted ones, due to clearence issues as i said above.
chainset off. probably not that hard - if raceface pretty easy. that's what mine had i think. if shimano you'll need the pre-load tool ( about 3 quid on crc ). you'll need the bb spanner - shimano or a.n.other that will do external bbs, about a tenner i think?
you'll maybe want a bit of tube that will go over the bb spanner - sometimes the cups are a bit snug to the frame.
then undo the screw that stops the mech rotating and pull the mech.
fit new mech. reassemble.
check the park tool repair site for extra help if you're new to this stuff. nothing too hard.
you could take a look at the mtbr forums for more info - they have lots of 'dales over there ( understandably ), and specific brand sections to their forums.
HTH.
yea i thought id have to take off the chainset by looking at it, if i was to get a new one id get get the same one anyway, thx for the advice, ill look into tools for the bb also, it cant be that hard to do, ive been trying alot of things my self recently anyway, i had the chain set off my self the other day for the first time, ive never done that and changed all the rings and put it back on so im doing something right lol, can u link me a tool i need for my BB ? its a external hope ceramic one, thx
