[#836534]

why when youve spent a fortune on one of their GPS's do they charge you another £25 for some very basic software to enable you to up/download routes to your PC.

n.b. this software has a very basic world map, so is useless fo actualy doing any route planning, it simply acts as a dabase for you'r/others routes!

What was that free/cheep maping program for windows mobile reviewed in ST a while back? Would that work (and export to a GPS?)

Try here. It's free and might do what you want.

Here is some free mapping that you can upload onto an SD card in your garmin. Not quite OS standard, but far better than TOPO maps. Also free, but you'l have to buy the card.

Their on line software is free and incorporates google earth, I did point it out to you last time you ranted about your garmin.

I get the impression that most of the rants on here about Garmins are because the Garmin owners don't really understand what a Garmin is designed to do. It is NOT a mini PC strapped to your handelbars.

I know, but nothing seems to want to work with it (eTrex legend with a serial cable and serial-usb addapter)

Garmin connect would be the free version of software. Plan stuff on Bikely or the like, heck, you could even save your stuff at Bikely as well!
EDIT I use an etrex but with a serial lead on an old laptop, not bothered getting a serial-usb adaptor. Apparently they can be problematic 🙂

I dont want a mini PC, i just want to be able to put a route onto it so I can ride (specificly on the road) without getting the map out every 30 seconds!

I could input the entire route manualy, but I'd be dead before I got to ride it after inputing each digit, of each co-ordinate by scrolling through the menu's!

I can read a map perfectly well, I don't need to know where I am, just want a route and directions on the screen!

If its mainly road routes bikely will automatically follow roads when planning (if you want it to) so would literally be a few clicks and done.

Get something like Memory Map or Tracklogs or Anquet
If you really don't want to pay for it, I'm sure you're aware of other procurement methods

heres one for the garmin techno wizards. i have a 705 and have the topo dvd and the street mapping sd card.

now problem is when i go to plan a route on my mapsource i can only plan it on my topo software as it cant see the sd card and its a bit of a pain when doing street level roads

i had it before where i had copied the img file from the sd card and put it in my garmin folder on the laptop and renamed it to match the original file name map so it thought it was showing base map but showed full street mapping it wasnt always routable but sometimes it did.

but for some reason the other day it stopped working and now i cant get it doing it again . i did try import maps from the garmin and it did copy the map and show it in map source and allow it to do auto routing but only til i turned it off

any ideas as im stuck (hope it makes sense lol) sorry for hijack op

Try the first link I posted. Should do exactly that. I use a Legend, plot all my routes on PC, transfer via USB and then just follow the directions given when riding. hardly ever get the map out. That's what you're after is it not? The system does work. Trust me. I'm not a doctor, but I do work for one!!!
