Okay, a bit of help please ...
Currently looking at a new frame and just spotted the spec list of a rear 142/12 hub.

Now I'm just used to regular 9mm QR xc bikes. Does this potential venture mean I also need to budget for new wheels?
Anything else I should be aware of please?

If you have a hope pro 2 then you can get a 12mm adaptor to make it fit 142x12.
If not then yes you need a new hub as a minimum

your 9mm is 135mm spacing... x12 is a 142mm spaced hub, but not different to a 135mm shell width unlike a 150mm hub would be.

142mm has a 3.5mm per side slot in the dropouts to increase lateral stiffness. unliek 135mm which buts up to the dropouts.

Star, thanks that helps.

So any 142/12 (rear) wheel recommendations for general xc?

Hi
Not sure if it's moved on recently, so forgive me if this isn't all correct.
I think Syntace developed this system initially, as above, essentially it's maxle with an extra 3.5mm slots in each drop out. IMO it's what maxle should have been in the first place, but instead someone else took the maxle idea and did it slightly betterer.
This should give you a list of hubs (scroll down) http://www.syntace.com/index.cfm?pid=1&pk=1314

Is an axle included with your frame????

There are now slightly different drop out designs using 142mm x 12mm, so if you haven't got the axle with your frame you need to select the correct one to match the slightly different drop out design. ie Syntace (X-12) and DT Swiss are the same, Shimano have a variation and I think Maxle (Sram) might now have a design on the theme.

Hope Hoops are good, very flexible in terms of hub type and well built.

I suppose a new frame will come with the axle I assume, so no issues. As above, Hope pro II hubs (or Hope hoops complete wheels) are the default for most. Buying new Hope wheels/hubs, you can specify hub set up, 2nd hand, you can buy a 142mm hub conversion kit. Otherwise, you could select hubs listed on the Syntace website.

Dt's 240 hub will do
142x12
135x10
135x9 and 5mm qr
just by swapping end caps.
142x12 end caps are tricky to find in stock though iirc
best buying them already spec'd on the hub!
