Be en after a set of forks for a straight 1 1/8th steerer and almost all seem to be tapered. Am I right in thinking I cant fit a tapered fork to a straight headtube?

Yes, if it's 44mm, not if it's 1 1/8 in

Depends on the width of the headtube. If it's a ye olde worlde headtube then you are knacked. What fork you after btw?
