Just seen an advert on BBC2 for the upcoming rugby season where they read out all sorts of stats. One was "...and teams cover over 2km in possession".

Now I'm sure I didn't mishear this, but it sounds a very unimpressive stat. It can't possibly have any reference to how far the team is running. What does it mean?

Rugby League fella..

wasn't it the adver for the Challenge Cup thats on this Saturday??

They only get a set of 6, then there is a forced turnover.

Isn't it "league", a sort of substandard game that prides itself on being dumbed down with lots of action like 20/20 cricket? Hence the BBC sales pitch with stats that you aren't supposed to question.

How can they do 2km in possession? The pitch is only 100m and they don't run up and down it 20 times. That must be for the whole game which isn't very impressive really - until you try and play a game. You run an awful lot further without the ball!

The players probably run nearer 8 or 10 kms in a game. From the OP's quote, I'd say that each team (ie all players combined) runs about 2km with the ball in their hand.

Are you sure about that? You may not see that much action in a union game, but you see far more in a game of league. JoeNation looks like he's understood it

I've played both and I'm very sure about that. My comment was aimed at the set of 6 comment above! I'm a Scottish person with no axe to grind or chip on my shoulder like you silly people down south do when it comes to league and union. You can check out our league team, the most northerly one in the world. Look up Moray Eels. They are mostly the same lads who will be playing for Lossiemouth RUFC on 5th Sept.

Yes, you are a rugby numpty for not even being able to spot that it was the League Cup, not the Union season which isn't even being shown on BBC.

I assumed that it meant the ball travelled 2km in hand for each team.
