Before I go ahead and place the order, what other bikes should I really have considered over a 45650b?
For trail riding, berm surfing, pump tracking, North/South Downs duties.
Steel preferred but not essential. Would take a lot of convincing to switch from hard tail too.
Cotic BFe?
Bird Zero, Commencal AM hardtail.
Awesome frame, mines built up with 26" wheels and dirt wizards and its a blast. Climbs alright and flies down hills.
I nearly bought a 45650b but the size I was after was out of stock. Couldn't wait so ended up with an NS bikes essentric. Great frame. Worth a look.
Transition Trans AM?
Stooge?
Stanton Slackline, nukeproof scout, dartmoor hornet/primal, whyte 909, orange crush, bird zero.
Never ridden any (except the crush) but would consider them for my next bike.

around £1300 from Alltricks.
'drools'
Good thing about the 45650b is that its cheap, made of steel and has a good geo.

I agree, value wise the 45650 looks best bet. I can't see anything close to similar spec on the X01 version for the same money either
Bird Zero, Soul 275 and the coming BFe275 would be near the top of my list apart from the 45650.
I went for the Soul for not entirely rational reasons, but these are bikes and they don't always make sense... 🙂
The on ones are built for midgets/trolls, very short reach. Go for something longer if you can afford it.
Spec doesn't matter as much as geometry. If you're biking on a budget you don't want XO1 either, as the mechs and cassettes are ****ing costly to replace.
Whyte 901 or the Nukeproof Scout would be my choice. The Whytes more stable, the Nukeproof is more playful. The Bird would be my third choice.
Nukeproof scout or orange crush am
Its not a short bike 592mm tt on a 16" is pretty long.
Weirdly I found my old large 26" Soul ever so slightly short. Wider bars helped, would probably try the same on 45650b.
Can't stretch to a Soul 275 full build (and they are still knocking out the dodgy painted frames at the moment which I'm not keen on).
I'm figuring, give the 45650b a chance to prove itself, if I still hanker after 853 next year then simply switch everything on to a 275 (with proper paint) when funds allow and flog the spare frame.
The reach is 390 on the 16 and 407 on the 18 inch. The reach on the 15 inch scout is 415mm and the reach on the 17.5 is 435mm.
It's short by new standards.
Thread reviver 😀 Just ordered the Bird Zero 1 after test riding one at Swinley Forest last week - brilliant fun bike and corners like a demon. The spec v price for the bike you are getting is a piggin bargain, IMO. Specs of my build...
