[Closed] Alp d'Huez / Bourg d'Oisans during the Tour?

[#4829572]

Planning a trip down there in my dad's camper van this year.

Now despite having been to Alp d'Huez/Bourg three years in a row, including the Tour in 2011, I can't remember how much space there is for camper vans etc on the hair pins. I remember the night before the Tour came through, everyone descended on the general area and there were tents, campers etc on ever conceivable open piece of grass, road side etc.

Plus, how many days before would we need to get there to get a spot. on the hair pins. Anyone done this and any issues with the Gendarmerie?

Also...where is the lowest cable car that will take dogs (i.e. a cabin, not chair lift) and do the buses run up the road to Alp d'Huez in the summer months?

I imagine it will be busier than usual being the 100th year.

Any other thoughts?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Earliest we'll get there is probably the Monday before the Thursday.

IMO it is madness to try to find a space on the ascent.

There will be plenty of space put aside with toilets etc up in the resort. We stayed right next to the DMC in the run up to the tour 2011, but 'escaped' before the madness totally descended. I reckon the hairpins are fully occupied a week before, and maybe even 2 weeks.

I distinctly remember 4 very drunk dutch fellas living in an Erde trailer. One day they lined it with a tarp and filled it with water, toasting every passing vehicle from their pool...

In 2011 I vaguely remember the hair pins filling up a few days before hand, but appreciate it will probably be busier this year.

Is it an 'Aires' or a camp site at the DMC or did you just park in the car park?

Pitch up nearby and cycle up on the day?

Not in the Aire, just on the grass to the north of the DMC. Organised though with bins and toilets provided. The Municpality knows it is going to get busy and increases the space available to vans. Tents and everything were getting pitched.

Yep, pitching up and cycling up on the day is the [s]back up[/s] most likely plan.

I think we'll take a look up at the DMC station for sure.
