recently ive been having issues with my shorts arm warmers and leg warmers basically anywhere there is a gripper touching my skin
seems i may be allergic to what ever they are made of - rubber at a guess
when ever i wear an item of clothing with a gripper for a couple hours regardless of brand , age or how it was washed i get a red line irritive appears , if i leave it for 5 or 6 hours my skin starts to blister and welt- only really noticed it the past few weeks , thighs are pretty scarred up now thanks to the blisters.
any one else suffer from this and know any solutions other than the one im using just now and thats to tuck the ends of the items up under them selves so the grippers not touching the skin directly
Heard of other people suffer from it, go to a doctor and get an allergy test done.
other than say yep your alergic to x y z is there anything they can actually do for it ....
im not going to the quacks for him to tell me something ive already figured out ....
I think there are treatments?
And it may be your allergic to a specific thing, and then you just have to avoid that when you buy cycle gear. May be that some grippers don't have what you're allergic to.
Probably latex based aren't they? Latex allergy is fairly common?
If it's only been happening the last few weeks it may be caused by sweat - or a heat rash/prickly heat.
the tabs are normally silicone.
Try putting chamois cream on where there it touches you and see if it stops?
as coffeeking says, my uncle had blotches all over his hands for ages till they worked out it was an allergic reaction to the latex gloves he was wearing for work.
you make a good point - i wear latex gloves almost everyday some times for 8 hours with no issues.
It all started happening when i bivyed a few weeks ago and forgot to take owt for my lower so slept in my shorts as it was a cheeky bivy. Woke up in the morning and my legs were on fire where the grippers were ! And the following week i wore my shorts for 300k and at about 6hrs in my legs were onfire - i pulled up the short to find blisters And after i finish 13 hours in i had clear weaping sores - which have scarred badly . Did 200k the next day with the grippers tucked up so the rubber not touching skin no issues and again the following week another 13hr ride with them tucked up no issue - noticed another guy with the same issue though. Are there shorts that dont use rubber in their grippers ? Elastic like the ye olde days : no leg grippers isnt an issue - bunch up central
try taking piriton a couple a day may help. i had anaphalaxys [not certain on the spelling here] a couple of years ago, passed out and couldn't breath. the gp sent me for allergy testing and they couldn't find a cause but i was getting itchy with blisters like you when in contact with random stuff like beach sand!!
the gp can prescribe steroids to reduce the immediate effect and will suggest a maintenance dose of piriton to reduce the effect of any reaction.
Some of my endura kit which has a solid 1/4" wide silicone gripper gives me similar issues. The ones that have the older style wavy line - no problems.
I almost think it's like a nylon burn rather than a rash - it could just be a tiny amount of movement with each pedal stroke which is constantly tugging at the skin.
