I rode a SS cross bike briefly at the turn of the year. I'd never ridden a geared cross bike before then. I rather liked it. Gone geared now (for racing).
I very nearly splashed out on the Nature Boy after I saw this pic....

A White Industries Eccentric Eric rear hub will allow you to use whatever vertical dropout frame you choose whilst keeping the chain adjustment clean.
I used one for two years trail riding on my KONA JtS and its a fantastic piece of kit, no issues.
Natureboy is lovely.
If you are doing more than cross Racing then the surly crosscheck is incredibly versatile with rack mounts etc.
