i've got an alfine hub, and a sprocket, and a fitting kit.
i don't have this bit:

is it important?
i got the fitting kit as a thank-you freebie, and it just seems like bad manners to ask for more - i don't really mind buying a kit, but don't want to spend a tenner just to buy one part if it's not necessary.

It's just a dust cover that clips on over the sprocket retaining circlip, so it'll work without it.
I agree, it'll work without it, but it is there for a reason and i would try getting hold of one.
I wouldn't ride mine without it
