As per title, looking at building around 8 speed alfine (Or Nuvinchi 360)
Not for carrying huge loads, but 2 kids & general family duties.
Fairly flat area

So, will the alfine be good choice for build & what gearing should I be looking at? I was thinking 32-22?

Open to advice ๐Ÿ™‚

Chain length on a cargo bike means a lot of tension on whatever type of tensioner is used. What frame?

I'd give Practical Cycles a shout. They sell Yuba's and the Nuvinci hub so should be able to advise on that combo.

Should work if you gear it down at the front.

Used an 8 on our Big Dummy - worked fine with an old mech as a tensioner. The ratio you suggest seems a bit low. From what I remember we ran a 44/20 worked fine - that low gear on the 8 really is quite low as a bail out gear. You could climb walls with 32/22!!

@motorman....

I tried to run a Alfine on my Yuba, and it kind of half worked.
The problem was that the big stand i had (hebbie?) rubbed on the chain without using a mech to keep the chain line lower. Also, the rear dropout size is a bit oversize, which means that the combination of spacers and alfine gets a bit tricky.

works...just.
