Just been through the same dilemma and have kitted out the workshop with a
Wolf Sioux 25L - 2.5HP, 9.5CFM Air compressor
With Free 5pc Kit! BNIB with warranty

Off eBay. £110 with a few bits n bobs No brainer. Works well. And it blasts tubeless on without any trouble.

Hey Charlie, how's that compressor working out? Tempted by one myself. Did it come with the required adapter for presta tubes?

I've got the same one as Charlie. The compressor is very good but the accessories aren't great really. The tyre inflator broke early on and the hose is really annoying as it seems to get stiffer over time and occasionally doesn't seal when you remove an attachment.

I'm going to get a new coiled hose as that should be a lot more usable.

It doesn't come with an adapter for presta valves but you should be able to get one of those from your LBS for very little.

Screwfix are doing one with a similar spec for £99.99 with the 5 piece toolkit. http://www.screwfix.com/p/michelin-mb24-24ltr-230v-compressor-5-piece-accessory-kit/24375

No brainer if you have a spare £110 to waste!

Neat washing up liquid round the bead and a track pump generally does the job (albeit messily).

I chose a cheapo option for mine..

- Pump air into a seperate tyre to 50-60psi with valve core removed and through aquarium tubing. When inflated, pinch tubing closed with pliers while removing pump and connecting tube directly from tyre to tyre to be seated (valve core left in. Release grip with pliers... "woosssssh".... tyre pops to rim, top up to desired pressure with pump.

There you have a free compressor. Works everytime for me (no washing up liquid/water needed) and costs nothing but a bit of elbow grease and small amount of fath.

I got a 5L one from screwfix (was about £50 but that is a couple of years ago). its very small but fine for car and bike tyres.

I like moose's idea though, you could even use the spare wheel from a car if you wanted a bit more air (my dad once amazed me by fixing my broken down saab using the air from the spare tyre to bleed the hydraulic clutch line)

Michelin one gets some shocking reviews on their website though.

Aldi-had mine for years & is one of the most used bit's of kit in the garage-until you get one you don't realise how handy they are.

the bad reviews are for powering air tools though, not pumping up tyres

indeed, but if I'm investing in a compressor, it may as well have some other uses too 🙂

I have the aldi compressor and this Prestaflator and the combination works well, even with a wire bead high roller with a few kinks in them from being posted.

Pedalhead, you are free to pop round any time and have a look

Got the prestaflator direct from the manu in the US. can't remember the total cost but is wasn't silly, and it arrived fairly quickly too.
