scratch about 50mm long - worse at the top from gritsone. What wet and dry to rub it smooth? 2000 grit?

Where can i get a CSU cheaper than £268? 1.5" steerer?

Any deals on cheap lyriks? Abroad?

Wet n dry to smooth off any burs, cover with nail polish, leave to dry and remove excess with wet n dry, going through the grades. done.

air or oil?

Why would this be relevant, its only oil in the lowers regardless of air or coil.

I've seen some pretty nasty scratches on Rock Shox that people have not bothered to smooth out and its had no effect on the seals what so ever!
Smoothing the scratch out is a good idea, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it and certainly wouldn't bother with a new crown and steerer.

I just used a nail file on mine and they seem to be working fine still, but not as big a scratch as yours sounds. Coil, not air.

Er, yes it is. Air seals need to be airtight, coil ones don't. Is it on the air side or the damper side?

The air seals that need to be airtight are on the inside of the stanchions though so it really is of no consequence

I did the exact same to me fox 32's i got 1200 wet and dry soaked it and then took the scratch of slowly until it is smooth again but feel a hole/gouge with nail.

I then used normal Araldite and dabbed it over the scratch filling the scratch/gouge, let it set over night then repeat with the 1200 paper it should now be smooth to touch and when you rub you nail over.

Hope this has helped

I've learnt something new today, apologies.

flyingmonkeycorps - the air side is a sealed unit - the stanchion "seal" is just to stop muck coming in to the lowers and keep oil in

I did the nail varnish and sanding thing on some Pikes with really knackered stanchions that were pissing oil. They've been fine for a good couple of years now.

Nail varnish (in a fetching shade of pink) and wet & dry on a horrendous gouge here. No problems.

I've known about scratches on my F32's well over 12 months ago.
Ignored them with no ill effects. Quite an expensive job to change the stanchions.

Go to Superdrug- gold nail vanish is the best.

I used the clear coat lacquer from my car touch up kit, worked well for me. several coats, patience and very fine wet and dry needed.

also back of a teaspoon to rub off burrs and edges is more localised than wet and dry

^^ this

the first scratch was the end of the world tbh I set to with the mrs best nail file and nail varnish and after making the scratch about 3 times bigger than it was, it was almost invisible if you stood 10m away and squinted.

The next scratch I simply CBA and after at least a year it's absolutely fine

Right - used the back of a spoon method on the worst burr - feels fine now - not sticking out. Finished off with a buff up using kitchen roll and t-cut!
