Planning on driving to Afan this friday eve from London (with a the option of staying the night in bristol and doing the rest early the next morning). And back on Sunday afternoon. Just found out the welsh rally is on!

Is this a terrible idea in terms of traffic?

I've never really noticed a massive increase in traffic when the rally is around, unless you are actually trying to follow it and get into one of the spectator car parks.

You WILL notice proportionately more Subarus and Mitsubishis around, generally being driven [s]badly[/s] with enthusiasm!

If you are lucky, you may find one of the unofficial stops - I wonder if they do this anymore? A few years ago we were racing cyclocross near Port Talbot (same valley as Afan). Just after our race finished, a handful of cars from the Wales GB rally stopped in the layby opposite and the drivers started to do some work on their cars. I seem to remember Loeb being one of them, but I may have made that up! Whoever was there, they were friendly and didn't seem to mind us chatting to them, poking around, checking out cars, etc.
