previous thread from a year or two ago

Thoroughly confusing myself now...

For comparison, full on 1x XT m8000 chainset is ~£88 plus ring (£34 -50) plus BB (~£13) = total £135+.

SLX m670 3x, drop granny and outer ring, £70 all in with BB included (upgrade to NW ring later).

SLX m675 2 x - seems not to be in stock except evans, and poss probs with ring <34T

There also seem to be SLX m672 and m677...

So what is everyone running now? Is the lack of M675 a subtle sign that they are about to bring out a new design?

Don't fancy a zee/saint 1x.

Any advice/opinions gratefully received.

I had the trusty double+bash SLX ones until I realised my messed up ankle meant I needed shorter cranks - so I have some lightly used 175mm ones of them to rehome. M665, that's it. For 1x I'd always want 3x spaced chainrings (double+bash is 3x arrangement).

Don't try to run a ramped middle ring or you'll end up needing a guide as well - which will cost more than and work less well than a narrow wide. Actually I've got a 34t one of those to rehome as well. God, I have so much gear to sell...

Personally I'd prioritise correct chainline over everything else, therefore if you're going to use a ring with built in threads & spacers (30t round or 32t oval) go for the M675. If running 32t round / 34t oval or bigger go for the M670. Also don't forget to factor in the cost of some shorter chainring bolts / shims / outer bash ring if going with the M670.

andy4d - how do you find the chainline on the 2x? what size ring?

I presume the outer mount, but can you fit a 32?

davewalsh - I'm after the best chainline, do great difference in look/price, and weight will be similar once I've binned rings.

I have spare 'short' bolts.

What rings come with builtin threads/spacers?

I am leaning towards the m670 3x, bin the outer and inner ring, should be able to run a 32, and a bash if I fancy later.

I am aware the ramped rings will be a bit jumpy, but it's flat round here and it worked on my last 1x til it got nicked (hence low budget to replace)

ordered the M670 3x.

Now waiting, wondering if I could fit a 30 in the middle ring position if 32 is too big...

Does anyone know?

Middle position on a 3x chainset is the correct position for chainline on 1x.

30T will fit fine as it has clever little integrated threads.
