I have decided to go 2 x 10 but am unsure which mechs I should have? As in long or medium cage for the rear?
And do I need a double specific front mech? Any advice would be appreciated

Shimano (2012) have a small "switch" on the front shifter pod to covert it from double to triple - mine's XT so just check the model details on the shimano website.
If you are buying a groupset (say, from Merlin or CRC) all the bits will be compatible.

Medium cage in the back and yes there is a specific double front mech - the drop of the cage is shorter to work with the smaller front ring.
