Hi all,
Off on a stag do to an activity centre near Abergavenny in a few weeks and would like to arrange some biking for a day.
So what I am hoping is that someone can advise me on a trail centre in the Llanthony area, we normally go to Afan but some of the guys think it's a bit far.
So something similar to Afan would be perfect.
Thanks
Black mountains cycle centre
As above or Bikepark Wales
Or Cwmcarn
BPW is only up the road (A465 > A4060) from Aber 🙂
BPW is 20mins from Aber (my in-laws live just outside Aber) but just about fully booked up until November. Cwmcarn is 30mins and maybe a reasonable alternative?
I'd probably suggest a natural trail depending on the weather.
EDIT - just noted you are at Llanthony - some good riding from your door
BPW has a good pedal-up route (Beast of Burden) or a fire-road route up. So no need to be restricted by the unavailability of the uplift. Just pay £6 to use the park for the day (including parking). I think you'd get more out of that than Cwmcarn especially as the Twrch is not fully open.
Well since I live in Llanthony I reckon I am pretty well placed to advise 🙂
As others have said, the Black Mountains Cycle Centre is just down the road. Great fun if dry and you like wheels off-ground action. Also good if you just want to improve your skills though. BPW is just 20 mins away... less now that the next part of the A465 dual carriageway is open. Cwmcarn is about the same distance to the south and Forest of Dean about the same to the East. And failing all that we have some great natural stuff here too, though it may be a bit sloppy by then.
I am guessing you will need to hire bikes though if it is part of the group activity, in which case only BPW or FOD would work.
Thanks all,
Yeah we are hoping to hire bikes as the logistics of hauling 12 bikes up there doesn't really work.
BMW seems the best choice, however £60 a day for bike hire seems expensive to me.
As for the natural riding,
I'd love to explore the areas but the ease of a trail centre with a big group just takes the stress out of everything and I wouldn't want to get everyone lost and ruin the day.
Bike hire available at Cwmcarn now, I think. Bike shop in the car park. New Cafall trail probably 2+ hours of riding with a big group plus the two downhill tracks.
IMHO Cafell is far better than any of the routes at BPW. Yes the climb is hard, but its a decent trail. Infact I'd rate both DH tracks as better than BPW also.
Cwmcarn FTW.
quick hi-jack.. is any of the twrch trail at Cwmcarn closed still? last time I was there the climb was closed off due to forestry works.
