In the summer the best option is to get up early and get the A9 done before it gets busy. It's horrible otherwise. Even on the motorbike it's pretty tedious.
I'm old enough to remember what the A9 used to be like.
No dual carriageway, few overtaking places, and having to crawl through every town and village like Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Kingussie, and Aviemore etc.
Add the trucks and caravans and it was a horrible experience.

me too - and what's now the A90 up the east coast.
one grandparent in Peterhead, the other in Inverness (with rest of that side of family on Skye). most of my school holidays were spent in the back of a [url=
viva[/url] going nowhere quickly.
left haddington at 5.45 am on satarday and was riding in torridon at 10.30 am including an aviemore buttery/caffine stop
the moral of the story is go early or have your tea at home and go late, either way youll get a clear run
I've been up the A9 quite a few times this year, usually heading to the Gairloch area. From door to door it's an easy 3.5 hours in the car (I've only got a 1.2 Honda Jazz so can't go all that fast even if I wanted to) or a bit under 3 hours on the motorbike. With the car it does require an early start for that though. On the bike it doesn't really matter as it's easy to overtake the traffic, however it's a lot more fun and less stress when the A9 is quiet.
If you think the A9 Perth to Inverness is bad try the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness.
rolfharris - MemberI remember discovering the roadworks at bankfoot at 10 under weekend when I was trying to get to the free dinner in time after work. Argh!
Had to do some seriously hairy driving along the road from Laggan, but it was good fun (wouldn't repeat it though!)
😀 that was fun. was talking about that this weekend on the way up to the hills with richard, lettie hal and geoff. i enjoyed that.

With you on that one seeing as I live right in the middle. Maybe that's why I enjoy the A9 so much.
