More info here - looks like the ferry is back on now.
If you look at the pictures linked from that page, it's basically he whole hillside that has failed. I see a bridge over the narrows in the future.

Basically, they're putting some rubber mats down beside the railway tracks so that vehicles can use the line when there are no trains due.
