may sound a little dumb, but how come you cant get this for 9 speed?? would be really handy for around the peak district for me....available on 10 speed but not 9, is there a reason? or is there such a cassette and im just being blind?
you can, HG61 is available in 12-36, see here
Matt
Yup, but no 11-36. You can combine the big (heavy!) HG61 with another cassette to make one, though so far I'm finding it hard going, the 11T ring needs machined down and it's bloody hard stuff. Not finished yet, I'll post back once I've got it working.
interesting! why only deore though? does sound a little heavy i must say, didnt really want to add more weight if possible....cant understand why they would choose to do it on deore only?
I think it's aimed at the touring market rather than MTBs, which seem to be race oriented design
Deore 36 with the 12 swapped for an 11, been running it for quite a while

It's aimed for 29ers actually, as they need slightly lower gearing due to bigger wheels to have equivalent roll out to 26".
If they did a range of 11-36s in 9 speed there'd be no reason to go 10 speed. Ditto 8 speed 11-34s.

Well, there'd still be other benefits to 10-speed but yep, this is exactly why neither Shimano or SRAM make them.
(Shimano did claim that their existing 9-speed mechs couldn't cope with 36 teeth, right up until they made the 36 tooth cassette. Smooth)
Yep asked if anyone had used the HG61 and substituted the 12t for an 11 a while ago. got no useful answers then...
how long you been running that shinythings and whats the jump at the bottom like? (11-14?)..
You can get a Ti 11-36 9 speed cassette of that bloke on ebay, expensive but I have had no problems with the1 I have.
So, it's a 100g heavier than a 34 but they only cost £20-30 making it cheap to keep sweet!
Cookeaa,
TBH, I don't really notice the jump when ging down as I use a rapid rise, not sure you would notice it more with a bottom normal.
My 32 x 11-36 with guide is working really well, although I do have to work harder now on really steep stuff( I can get up our STD tester hill Hameldown so it can't be bad). It's a good balance between lightness, cheapness, simplicity and reliability and spinning out hasn't been an issue. Also makes a mockery of this ridiculous 2x10 tripe that people are being convinced to believe is a major step forward 🙄 £60 every 6 months is my way forward 🙂
