I have finally had my arm twisted to update my wife's ancient bike [she won't buy a new one cos blokes do that !!??!!] The rear hub is an 8 spd with a spacer so it can take a 7spd block. Am I right in thinking I can chuck the spacer and put a 9spd cassette straight on? I know I will have to replace derailleurs and shifters but as these are 100GS* I think it is about time.
* a very old Low spec Shimano groupset

Yes.
You will also need narrower chainrings especially if it was all old 7sp stuff.
