It looks like my upgrading of my old bike has left me ahead of the curve.

My wheelbase is 48"

Its a 2005 giant reign with a shorter shock, 190mm vs 200mm, and a longer fork, 170mm vs 150mm.

Does this mean I've arrived at next years marketing geometry? 🙂

your weight appears to be nearly directly over the back axle, it must be easy to manual 🙂

Disappointingly, nope.

Although that could be my lack of manualing skilzz

It does mean that you can no longer keep the front wheel down on anything we might call 'up'.
I hope you some day ride a bike that has the fit and geometry for you.

Its easier to keep the front end down now than with the previous 90mm stem and 150mm forks.

I like its geometry but I don't think i've ever actually seen a bike big enough for me in a shop.

This ones xl. There's not a huge number of xxl full suspensin frames about. Got any recommendations?

It'd be better if you put the frame back to standard geometry and stuck a slack set headset on it IMO..
You've slackened off the head angle by just tipping the frame backwards, a slack set would slacken the head angle but keep the seat angle as intended.. ish..

It's a 1 1/8th head tube isn't it? If so an angle set won't work.

Is that Cannock in the lower photo? Ever thought of a 29'er?

They do make 29" bikes now for oversized people such as yourself you know?

You've seem to have made the MTB equivalent of this-

But I guess if it works for you it's all good.

It looks like it's been blown over in a strong gale.

One thing I don't get - Why the short shock? 10mm is a looong way into the travel and I can't imagine that it doesn't give massive dynamic compromises not to mention killing any ground clearance (even with the longer fork). Is it effectively a DH bike most of the time?

I don't know about your particular bike (as long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters really) but it does look as though the industry is about to try and sell us bikes with longer wheelbases (and chainstays), which is quite funny when you remember all the criticisms of 29ers requiring the same. Of course, the new offerings will have the on trend 650b wheels, so we'll get all the downsides of longer wheelbases and chainstays without the advantages of the bigger wheel. Should be fun 🙂

recomendations

Salsa horsethief in XL, tis epic. "only" 6'4" but I can run a 60mm stem. It'd fit someone taller than me too, got a reverb in with about 1" below the collar showing, if that makes sense.

Turner Sultan. I've been riding one for 5 years and it is better at mountain biking than I am.

I doubt you'd see a 23" mountain bike in a shop. I never have. You just need to talk to people and do your homework. When I lived in Bristol I happily let other tall chaps try the Sultan and the 21" Scandal for size.

I can vouch for Martin doing exceptionally well even on steeper uphills, let alone when pointing that long beast down (the 'beast' as it happens).

Hello Sven! (waves!) I seem to remember you chatting away merrily as I slogged up hills trying to keep up 🙂

I've thought about a 29'r, tried a mates 20" on one. I wasn't sold on the weight of the wheels or on changing all my tires over. Also there's not many xxl bikes, never mind many xxl 29'rs

From salsa horsetheif review
http://test.dirtragmag.com/review-salsa-horsetheif/

"...This better positions the rider for more aggressive trails by keeping more weight over the rear wheel."

"The increased travel will also make a long bike longer, increasing the wheelbase of this XL up to 1,200mm—that’s longer than many downhill bikes."

" This long and slack trail bike allowed me to (as promised) devour terrain. The long wheelbase gives the Horsethief a very stable and confident ride—especially when pointing the bike downhill."

Salsas effective top tube 25.6", mine 24.8" so a bit longer. so all i would gain is 0.8", 20mm (and a non comedy seat tube angle?)

It's the seat tube angle, plus the smaller frame size, that is putting your weight so far back. I used to have a Scott RC that did that as well. I used to think it was OK and it fitted me as well. Then I got my Scandal and realised that the bike had been wrong and I'd just convinced myself it was OK.
29er wheel weight on a bike that was too small for you anyway? If you have the arms of a 90lb ladyboy I could see your 'problem'. Regardless whether you try 29er (and a good 29er is a very good thing), you'd likely be much happier on something with geometry that fitted you better.

Or, all the advantages of longer wheelbases and chainstays, without the disadvantages of the big wheels? Why is every change in mountain biking seen as marketing guff? The geometry of modern bikes is streets ahead of old bikes IMHO.

I love the fact that you've modified the bike to make something you like. It looks very wrong because of what they eye is used to.

You can get em for 1.18th, Works components do em..
As said above ^^^ an XXXXXL Sasquatch Sultan would be the better bet, but it won't be cheap with a decent fork and wheels to suit..

You could do something like this, but just use the lower bottom bracket. 😉

Years ago Kona did a full susser with a 23" frame. Looking at their site they claim 661mm ETT for the Process 29er.

The bike at the top does look like it would make fast flat corners interesting to say the least.
