has anyone owned both?
much difference in the ride?
apart from the Quirky bits is the Blue Pig any better?
yes owned both.
456 = excellent
pig = sh*te!
glad to be of assistance 😀
why is the pig shite? they are both generic steel hardtails that cost little, quantify your thoughts
owned both
the 456 felt a lot more capable. managed a alps trip on it, kept it 18 month
road the pig for 2 big rides and sold it, it felt low at the front for some reason, even with a 150mm fork.
similar to tons experience by the sounds of it, but i gave it 3 rides. swapped all the kit to a 456 and never looked back.
unstable (generally) and difficult control at low speeds. (cue " it's probably your skill level" posts 🙄 )
didn't do it for me, and a fair few others that i know.
thoughts quantified 😀
The geometry looks identical on both frames 😕
The head angle's much slacker on the pig, no?
built a 20'' 456 up for my son recently.
bomber 66's 800mm wide bars saints..............it is a ****in blast.
feels too small for me tho, with me riding mansize bikes now (cough 29r cough).......... 8)
Hmm I've only had a 456 which was ok, bit long for a short arse like me, and the chain suck issues. The reports above seem strange as you would expect the PIG to be better given that they had the same designer and the PIG came more recently..

Oh yeah I was thinking of the 456 Summer Season which afaik has the same head angle as well. Half the price and lighter I think. Don't see the point in the Blue Pig "on paper", but I've never ridden either bike to be able to form a proper opinion.
i had a summer jobbie too, sold it after 1 horendous ride round crossfell/high cup nick............ 🙄
Bottom bracket too high on the pig...
I think im gonna stick with my little blue 456, its much fun.
But what if I threw a Dialed or a Soul into the equation
I like my Summer Season with 150mm Z1's. Or a rigid fork and a 29er front wheel. If it were 2lbs lighter it'd be perfect, probably.
love my pig*.
not a million miles away from a 456 - which i don't own, but have ridden a bit.
*climbs well, descends well, no problem at all along flat bits if you're used to downhill bikes - i appreciate it'll be weird if you're not. it's stiffer than you'd hope for from a 'twangy steel' frame, but you can fit a big soft tyre in the back. it's also very comfy for long rides once you get your head around the slack head angle.
ive owned both, initially i used the kit from the 456 and put it on the pig. but now ive swapped lots of bits about
i found the pig climbs better, on the 456 i had to work to keep the front down (or use the talas and drop the front) and the pig climbs great, i can generally climb on a harder gear too for some reason.
going down the pig wins hands down for me too i feel much more confident on the pig and it feels much more stable to me
the only place i find the 456 was better is that if on a long steady not too uppy downy ride it seems to ride nicer dunno what it is the pig is great on up/down but not as good on the inbetween. this isnt a problem and ive done all day rides before just i can feel something not working as well. tho is is made with hebden geometry ™ so is perfect for steep stuff
great bikes tho and i wouldnt hesitate to recommend it 😉 and please bear in mind i cant ride for cough candy twist so take with a pinch of salt
pics of the two set ups for comparison
Never owned a 456 but my thoughts on the pig are the same as firestarters.
