I'm building up a budget 29er (which is already over budget). If I run a 39 tooth chainring (a road 105 chainset) with an 11-34 cassette (1x10) will the gearing be too high?
I have a 32 with 11-34 on the 26" bike.
With the bigger wheels of the 29er will it be OK or must I get myself a replacement chainset?
That'll be bloody tall gearing. Be similar to running a 44t on a 26" bike. If you want to actually ride it off road I'd not do that.
That answers that then... thanks. Off to ebay I trot.
I ride 36:20 which is 52" gear inches, same as 2:1 on 26"
42/22 to 34/11 cassette is a range of 19" to 110"
52" puts you at 57% of the three ring range
39 to 34-11 cassette is 33" to 103" so assuming you rarely sit and spin in 6th on the cassette and granny up front, or 2nd on cassette and middle ring on a 26" bike then dont see why not...
I've got a 39t big ring on my 2x10 xc 29er. I'd go for a 32t 1x10.
What stoner said, although my conclusion would be it's way too high
As a rough guide, a gear on a 29er feels 2 or 3t harder than the same gear on a 26.
32 with a 11-34 on the back here, fine for nearly everything but occasionally need to summon strength of the bear on prolonged steeps.

Not sure I get this, we're talking single ring, so anything in middle or granny is irrelevant shirley? But... IMO it's a hell of a ratio for a single, yes ok it's still easier than SS, but far from ideal IMO.
18:40 for me ๐
i run a double 39/26 on my 29er with a 10 speed 11/34 cassette - although the 39t would be tall, it wouldnt be that bad (as long as you dont live near any steep hills) Bristol area is fine for me. i usually stick in in the 39 and leave the 26 alone.
but....
if it was me i'd go for a 32 or 34 for 1x10 just for alround capability.

I was making the comparison with a "traditional" 3 ring setup and where a standard SS gear lies in relation to them both.
52" versus,
39T/34-11 (29er) is 33" to 103"
Normal three ring is 17" to 100".
Perhaps I'll give it a go initially and see how I get on, then change if need be - which is probably the case as I'm more of a spinner than a big gear pusher. It's just wishful thinking.
Running a 36T up front and an 11;32 up the back. It's fine for me. I'd think a 39T would be hard ๐
Tried that.felt pretty bad.
A road triple running 24/26 -39-bashguard works allright though.
74bcd (granny) is usually 30,but you can go down to 24.
a compact crank works fine.34 or 33 ring +bash.
have a look at the non series shimano compact cranks, they're pretty cheap in germany.
having said that.maybe with a 36 on the back.
you can get a 38 ring for 130bcd,but it's not going to change much.
I'd look into a spiderless crank.
or a shimano nexus 33t crank from rose,only about a tenner.+ you'll need a sq taper bb.
only come in 170 tho.but it'd tide you over until it wears out.
