Contemplating swapping the cranks on my CX for some to take a direct mount ring but I want to run at least a 38t, does such a setup exist??
There wasn't one 12 months ago and absolute black told me it would be too flexy
A quick google shows that SRAM make 38 and 40T retainer rings for GXP and BB30:

As above - the blackbox chainring (which is a serious piece of chainring engineering) is available up to 40T. Part code for a 38 from Fishers is CW8018009. In stock but at £73 its not cheap... but is probably the best chainring on the market right now.
Aerozine do one, on ebay for around £50 from china.
As an aside, does anyone know if sram road and mtb spider fittings are the same? I have a rival 22 chainset and the splines the spider fits onto seem to be a bit bigger (briefly tried it with a mtb 4 arm spider
Cheers lads, as for the road and mtb I think the fitting is the same but the offset is quite different. I did find a comparison when I was searching last night and I'm sure there was about 5-6mm in it.
EDIT: Just found it but it was gxp and bb30 that's different offsets on mtb only.
Be careful, it seams that road and MTB spiders are not the same/interchangeable. Tried to fit a direct mount chainring to my rival cranks and the splines on the ring are a smaller diameter than the the cranks/original spider. It fits fine on my x9 cranks though.
I wonder if the bb30 cranks have a larger spline diameter to accommodate the larger axle and road chainsets have bb30 spiders, including gxp!?!?
