Thinking of ditching some rarely used bikes to buy one.
Looking at a Bob Jackson Vigorelli track with brake/brakes and an SA 3 speed hub.
How the flip do you get a wheel out with full guards?

The idea appeals at the moment ๐Ÿ™‚

Also I've never ridden fixed except at the track.

The bike it'll be replacing is a semi retro Condor which is a mix of Campagnolo Super record and Nuovo Gransport. It's 10 speed with cantis, guards and modern aero levers. Down tube levers and 27 x 1 1/4 Campagnolo/Fiamme wheels.

You need 1) Durano Plus tyres AND 2) SKS Secuclips on the back guards as well as the front.

Having said that.... This morning I had to pop the rear wheel out for a slow delate (twisted inner tube had rubbed a hole), and you slide the wheel forward drop the chain and deflate the tyre. Or you fit rear SKS clips.

Fixed on the road is liberating. Until your first speed hump. The second is easier. I ride 100mi a week on the road, fixed. The hardest part is clipping into Look pedals when you can't coast.

So would a 120mm OLN 3 speed hub be a better option?

Better than what? A new bike? Don't be silly ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seriously, where I ride is pretty flat so I ride a single ratio. If was hilly I'd still take the fixed option and add the SA three speed. I suspect that if you have semi-horizontal drop-outs on that frame, then yes the 120 hub would be fine. If you were local, I'd just lend you a rear wheel to try fixed. That was the old way... (before vertical dropouts).

i have a bobby j vigorelli, absolutly fantastic on the track. a little bit twichy on the road.

very very stiff frame, very high bb to avoid pedal stikes, and steep head angle, both great on smooth banked corners, but dont expect to go swooping round country lanes on it!

Got mine for the preston park track league, then moved to london, and used it to commute to reading for two years, 120 odd miles a week, rode a 47-16 on 165mm cranks, finally gave in and bought a propper road bike which suprisingly rides like a dream!

How about a SA S2 - Kick down jobbie means no shifter/cabling to bother with and you can still have a climbing gear....

I've still got a couple of SA 3 speed hubs in the garage waiting for me to decide what to build them into (1off 110mm, 1off 120mm both 36H), one day i'll build them into wheels...

Ebay is awash with SA ubs and parts

cookeaa.
Ideal, I didn't know such a thing existed. So now I'm giving myself a moment to decide if I really want one.
Thing is spec wise there's nothing to think about, pick the frame and hub and the rest is really token?
I like the Mercian version of the Vigorelli track bike, though both Mercian and Bob Jackson offer a version for brakes and mudguards both of which are essential for my needs.
Just hope the gearing will get me over the Chilterns.
