Planning my next bike and have a few questions regarding drivetrain...

If you run 2x9 what rear mech can you run? Could you get away with a short cage, or would it have to be medium or long to hit all gears?

Also, If I decided to go 10 speed could you keep your 9 spd rings at the front, front mech and front shifter? Only changing the rear mech, cassette and rear shifter? And what about the chain??

Thanks in advance for any info

You don't need a long cage as you won't be running a big ring on the front...

I have kept my 9 speed front rings and used a 10 speed cassette and rear mech & 10 speed shifter on my hard tail with no probs at all... ended up using a KMC 10 speed chain which runs really sweet.

You'd certainly get away with medium cage, short cage will depend on your ring choices.

You can indeed get away with your front mech/shifter/rings, and just replace rear mech/chain/cassette/shifter. I've used SRAM, Shimano and KMC chains, they're all much of a muchness performance wise!
