If i change from a 3x10 to 2x10 as i need a chainset soon'ish , do i need new shifters too and cassette (11-34 currently) ?
Can't you just remove the large ring or do you want a 2 x 10 specific?
Damn double post
To answer your questions: no and no. You probably will need to get a bigger middle ring or you will spin out to early. If I was going 2x10 (currently 2x9) my perfect combo would be 24/38 front with an 11/36 cassette
Do I need new shifters - probably not - the recent XT shifters have a switch to go to 2x10.
Do I need a new cassette - if you need a new chainset the cassette and chain will probably be worn and need replacing.
But - you may want a new front mech - the 2 x 10 one is shorter and works better with the smaller big front ring - especially if you are running with full suss.
It is worth noting some bikes - Orange 5, Orange Gyro, SantaCruz Superlight don't work well with modern 2x10 set ups where essentially the middle ring is bigger than on 3x10 and now fouls on the main pivot.
You could also take the benefit from a shorter rear mech.
So it is as expensive as you like.
Or you can just take the big ring off a 3x10 and not have so many gears or issues but the front mech will be too high and look a little silly. If you do this you will need a bashring or shorter chainring bolts.
