Bought a 2nd hand car 3 weeks ago that has now developed a problem do i have any recourse to the dealer or do i pay out of my own pocket?
None at all I suspect. A case of 'caveat emptor'

Take it back it's within a short period of time and it's not fit for purpose, be nice but be firm and stand up for yourself.
take it back any dealer worth his/her salt will help you out unless it's a £100 banger maybe 😉
You can use the Sale of Goods Act "implied terms" up to 90 days after a sale. (Fit for purpose means you have to prove it was sold for a specific purpose.)
It states that a product sold must be of "satisfactory quality" if you're not satisfied, you have the right to return the product for a full refund, or exchange to the value thereof.
I found this out by contacting trading standards in relation to a problem with a used car.
I'd advise you to contact them. They'll send you a template of a letter to send to the dealer so you have a record of contact should it go to court.
The threat of trading standards alone got me an upgrade to a better car with a full service and new timing belt.
Needless to say i now use a different dealer, and i'm more demanding when buying a car. I've since got some some great deals.
