I need a new front tyre for the 29er (xc hardtail)

running a mud X rear but might want something wider upfront (it's rigid for the next few months...)

Geax Gato 29 x 2.3, for £8.

Superb for winter action.

I swear by Bonty muds.
Would some chewy bars from on one give you that extra comfort while you retain that mud slicing ability?

How muddy? Maxxis Beaver might do it?

Geax Gato 29 x 2.3,

it's so tight i can't get it on the rim - hence needing a new tyre!

not too muddy. South downs conditions so slimy chalk and surround woodland....

really? That's a shame - never had a problem with three of them on a WTB frequency team i19 rims. work great tubeless too.

Spesh purgatory, not an XC tyre, or mud specific, but great in the winter slop without dragging horribly on dryer bits. they're my favourite Autumn to Spring tyres.

Or 45nrth Nicotine, 2.35, but apparently more like 2.5, and looks like a Purgatory on steroids. And only £25 at CTBM.

I used to run skinny XC mud tyres on my Anthem in the winter (Spec Storm Control up front and a Maxxis Beaver at the back) but, in addition to a paper-thin casing on the EXO Beaver, I felt that it was limiting the bike as it's so capable.

I now run a 2.3" Vigilante up-front and a 2.3" DHR II on the rear and they're so much more confidence-inspiring. There's so much more grip and cushioning.

Also the step-change from riding my Reign with big, beefy winter tyres to riding the Anthem is nowhere near as great - I used to get caught-out by the lack of grip on the Anthem after I'd ridden the Reign in mud.
