Hi,

I've got a Scott Scale 950 which came with some Syncros XC-49 Alex rims (on Formula CL51 Front, Shimano FH-M595 Disc Rear hubs).

I've been thinking about upgrading them and wondered if I would see a noticeable difference with a new set? I'm looking to spend upto around £400 if anyone can recommend some?

Cheers,
Andy

Yes it will / can make a big difference, especially on a 29'er where the wheel set is proportionally heavier

My XTC Advanced came with the stock Giant wheelset

The first thing I did was get some wheels built with DT 350 hubs and Roval Traversee rims.

Lopped a big chunk of weight off, much stiffer wheel set, wider rim to support 2.2-2.3" tires properly and allowed easy tubeless conversion with Stan's no-tubes (photo above shows bike before I did tubeless with Specialized Control tires)

The Roval rims are not available aftermarket, but Easton ARC are very similar, I suspect come out of the Alex factory like the Roval rims did

Have a look at their various options on wheels. They even have their own hubs now so can do good wheel builds for excellent money.

I changed mine this year for Hope Enduro's. The slightly wider rim means the tyre sits better and I really wanted better hubs after the Giants only lasted one winter despite DT Swiss internals.
For under 400 I got straight pull hubs and there were Stans tubeless kits in the box too.

Winstanleys have got American Classic wheels reduced to £300 a pair, I've been running a set for nearly 3 years and they're great. I'm tempted to get another pair myself...
