29er wheelset recommendations pretty please

[#12940785]

I've just bought a spanky new frame and I'm currently sourcing bits to make it into a rideable trail mincer.
Forks are in the post - I've just got everything else to choose and buy which is exciting/daunting/a PITA.

Next up is a 29er wheelset.
Hunt EnduroWide are a great price ATM but I've heard lots of tales of 'they're made of cheese'.
That's made me hesitant/reluctant to go down that route TBH. Is this true or bollocks?

The bike will be a fairly rowdy Privateer 141 but not used anything like it's capability allows.
I don't really do 'air' though that might change (I've got more adventurous in the last year) - local stuff isn't that rocky but I do go to Wales/Peaks/Lakes occasionally. The bike won't be a lightweight but I don't want to lug anymore excessive rotating weight than I need to if possible.

I have a 27.5 Pro 4/DT Swiss EX511 on the back of mine ATM which is still straight as a die after 2 years.
I don't want 50p shaped wheels after a few months essentially! I'd love this set up on the new bike but funds prob won't go that far - budget ideally around £400 though it could bend if I really need to...trying to keep to a self-imposed budget.

I'd really appreciate some pointers - especially as 29" is a whole new world for me! TIA

JRA do excellent alloy wheelsets at around your budget. I went for 25mm width for a general XCish hardtail but they do wider rims. Mine have lasted three years so far without any problems

Off the shelf, the DT Swiss 1900 whatever they're called are just a really solid, good value wheel-set. Not the lightest out there, but can't fault them for all-round use. Peak District based, lots of rocks. Or whatever's next up their range 🙂

SH Hope or DT on DT rims would be my recommendation. Sure Bikewheelsdirect had Pro5 complete wheels for good prices also

I have Hunt Endurowide on my 141. They're not dead yet but I've not had a chance to thrash them. They've had half a dozen trips to Wharny. I've also had a pair of Rimpact Pro's fitted since day 1. Wouldn't ride without them now.

Had the Hunt Endurowide V2 on the Slayer for three years, run them with DD Assegai/DHR II/ Shorty combos, no inserts; they've been hammered and stood up well. Revs, Dyfi, Antur, BPW, Wharny to name a few.

Like @sharkattack Wharny is my local so they get a good beating there. They've had dings as is expected, but stood firm. Their weakness is the shit seals so bearing changes are a few times a year and bloody annoying.

I've gone to the Reserve Alloys recently, a night and day change. I've kept the Hunts as they'll be my spare 'just in case' set.

I just had some wheels built for my 141 Hope pro5 one XM481 front EX511 rear, all silver, they look and ride stunning, £520 to my door, even came with spare spokes, I have some EX511 on pro4 that I’ve had for a couple of years, hopefully these are as good, I’ve had three sets of Hunt wheels the first two where fabulous, the last set a spoke came loose, but otherwise I rate them.

Not sure if CRC is still doing any deals on them but I can recommend the Nukeproof Horizon V2, decent weight, strength and price and they've stood up to a decent beating round the Peak against my clumsy riding style!

Mangled a set of Trailwides before them on the same trails that I got repaired and keep as my backup set now.

Deals on at Merlin Cycles currently. A pro 5 set will cost you £450 or £370 if you choose pro 4 rear/pro5 front.

https://www.merlincycles.com/brand/hope/hope-mountain-bike-wheels-95322/

I got an email the other day saying they had an extra 10% off, but it didnt give a code. Maybe you apply it at point of payment.

Hmmmmm very tempted by a set of Hunt Trail Wide for the kid so I don't need to wrestle with his bloody inserts and DD minions every time we go to a bike park....

£280 seems like not a lot of money

A mate of mine has Hunts on his Ti Sodamax and they aren't the best for staying true and the nipples have seized

I've recently bought a s/h Hope Fortus 30 on Pro 4. Only had a handful of rides, but it's had some proper Peak rock fest tests on the front of my 25kg tank.

Had a few loud dings that made me wince, but not a mark. They aren't the lightest though

Those silver pro 5 look mint, I think it's time silver spokes came back into fashion, who decided all bikes are having black spokes now anyway, it's one of the reasons I build my own wheels.

Not sure I'd recommend Trailwides I had alot of issues with spokes losing tension on my 141's rear trailwide before it eventually cracked at BPW. (Replaced with a Hope Fortus)  Don't think I'm the only one either. Know plenty that run Enduro wides with no bother though!

I’m on Fortus 30 on Pro 5s. Bombproof but heavy and probably too much for the OP’s needs.

Nukeproof Horizon V2, decent weight, strength and price and they’ve stood up to a decent beating

I thought that, so sourced one (a rear) for my son. Lasted 2 rides and he killed it. (Tredz never did come back with any replacement options, so he's got a Deemax which seems to be holding up well.)

light bicycle did well for me, got them build and to me in a few weeks when I needed a set. Friend who owned a bike shop and was fussy about parts and a great mechanic recommended them to me as the only chinese group he'd use.

Have you looked at Silt AM wheels? £300 posted and very good so far in my experience. 1800g and similar hub to DT.

I've absolutely hammered my trailwides and they've been fine.

They've done BPW, revs, antur, Ardrock twice, and loads of other trailcentre and natural stuff.

For the money they're hard to beat.

As a balance I have gone through 2 rear Fortus rims in less than a year (single cavity Fortus30 and a first gen Fortus25). One I hit a rock on a drop that was about shin height dented not saveable (Fortus 30), second fairly big case dented same result.(not sure much would have survived the second). Im very light on bike parts never broken anything apart from these rims. Would 100% not buy again and not recommend.

If you're not in a mad rush for them I would wait a bit and get some 511s they are just such a solid rim.

I'd go either:

DT factory, either X1900 (25mm) or M1900 (30mm) depending on tyre width and weenie desires. Very good wheelsets.

or

I'd go handbuilt Hope Pro5 (or 4) on your DT rim of choice (421, 481, 471 511) depending on, again, width and burliness.

471 rear 511 front. Or both 471
Hope hubs (good spares and adaptable). C-Xray spokes. Or cheaper Sapim depending on cash available.
Build by DCR wheels. Can’t beat their build quality.

Been running a set of Hunt 29er XC Wides for the last three years now. Still running tight and true with no dings, theyre nice and light, and seem plenty strong enough for general off road and trail centre duties, Reliablity has been good:  one bearing needed changing  (easy job) a year back.

My only gripe has been the axle is held in place by the non driveside endcap being pressed in and held in palce by friction, not a bolt or nut so the complete axle, freehub and cassette will occasionally pop out when the wheel is removed from the bike. An easy fix but a bit annoying as Hope hubs seem to manage to do this so it works reliably.

Still reckon theyre a bargain (I bought a set of Gravel Wides too which are very good) but hey, what do I know.

single cavity Fortus30

The triple cavity ones are the ones to run, but with the obvious weight penalty
