Looking at my recent weight gain, it's clear I need to get more miles done on the bike. So I've been thinking about commuting a few times a week. The route is about 15 miles each way, mixed tarmac/gravel/offroad.
I'll be trying to avoid traffic where possible, but some tarmac will be unavoidable. I expect a 60/40 split between road/offroad.
I'm looking for reasonable balance for speed vs comfort, so probably not too skinny, with decent durability.
Any thoughts?
Small block 8s?
Folding Smart Sam 1.75"'s for me.
This appears to be a bit of a running theme today:

For road and light offroad then Big Apples would be fine.
If also mixing in some more rough stuff then can recommend the Conti Race Kings for fast rollingness. Can't comment on longevity though as mine have only gone on this week.

Thanks all, some interesting options there. I'm wondering if Schwalbe Marathons in 38 or 40mm might be reasonably well cushioned? Anyone using them for light off road?
I'll be doing the route a few times with my current tyres to see what's what first of all...
I've got some 40mm Marathon extremes that are off road capable and comfy if you don't inflate to max pressure.
I've been using Marathon Mondials for on and off road stuff - and that's with the bike carrying tent etc.
Just stumbled over these - Much cheapness:
