Eldest_oab needs to replace his tyres and have a spare for travels.

He runs insert and needs a dual ply or beefed up sidewall - we have destroyed rear rims before on anything less. He is a fast and aggressive rider. Trails are (hopefully) warm, rocky southern Europe and BC.

He (and I) are utterly confuzzled by the variety of carcasses and compounds, we have returned one tyre from Merlin which was described wrong, some of the CRC ones also seem to be wrongly or ambiguously described.

Local shops are £70 a tyre 🙁

He has liked his Magic Mary, HR2 or Hans Dampf before, loves his Wild Enduro on the front.

What is out there? Links to things he can buy please!

Hans Dampf Supergravity Soft 2.35 - brilliant, tough all rounder and they tend to be better priced than Maxxis.

Check out Bike24 or Bikediscount for good deals around £35/tyre, I usually get two or three tyres to make the postage more efficient.

Grab a Mary 2.6 as well, they are amazing.

Used, but not much.

Our daughter has competed with the Butcher Blck Dmnd on the rear of her 29er Enduro for over two seasons world wide. We are still running the prototype she was given at one event, on another bike, as she was getting frustrated with rear flats. It could be luck but since then she hasn't had a rear flat and last years tyres are still on the bike for the next race.
She doesn't run an insert and runs it at 24 psi no matter what the conditions

The link is to last years sale tyres which are the same as the ones she uses. The new ones have a saw tooth design on the tread supposedly further to improve grip

I use the 2.3” Grid version of this (with an insert) and I’ve found it pretty damned good in all conditions (mud and loose dirt included).

https://www.bikeradar.com/reviews/components/tyres/mountain-bike-tyres/specialized-eliminator-blck-dmnd-tyre-review/

You can get them for £40:

Annoyingly I can’t find them cheap in a 2.3 - but the 2.3 is actually 2.4” wide and the 2.6 actually 2.5” wide!

I’d run a Maxxis DH casing on the back if I wasn’t too bothered about pedalling performance.

Usually going on EBay new for about £25 if people are swapping them out. Maxxis were selling DD casing tyres on their own shop for about £25 each last month too.

The Michelin’s absolutely won’t last, despite the weight, the sidewalks are remarkably soft. I’ve never known a brand of tyre that a lot of my riding group have used & all slashed multiple sidewalls on.

Still can’t look at Schwalbe, as they still can’t manage to get the knobs to not tear off quickly.

Michelin wild enduro rear?  it's a bit draggy but pretty tough.  Either that or a Bonty SE5/4/3.

Hob Nob where do ride to destroy michelins ?  Its about the only tyre I haven't killed with Sarf Downs flints (Bonty's (Non SE), Kenda, Schwalbe and don't get me started on Maxxis).

Just to add she has used it in most of the places he is visiting. Hope he has a great time.

Tracey, that looks spot on. I've told him to order two...

He should be good - a bit concerned by the virus...

We've a new drivetrain on, spare one in the bag, fork and shock serviced this week, a few select tools, some new clothes and toothbrush, 14 days to go and he is off to Portugal...I'm so bloody jealous. #livingthedream

Might be worth sticking a spare mech hanger in there and a few spokes and tyre plugs

I thought they would be. Tend to leave the stuff she always takes in the bike bag so when she decides to disappear she hasn't forgotten anything. She does palm stuff from our tool and bits bag when no one is looking if she thinks she needs it and then we have to restock before she gets back.
She also has a spare card on ours for emergencies or on a stop over with no currency but will always check with us before using it.
