what advantage do you get from it ?
non
they are 3 better than 26er'ers
mine goes to 11
none whatsoever, it's done to be different and they are only for fire roads otherwise they'll kill you on the first corner. No one actually rides them that's why you only see pictures of them in trees or or resting artistically on woodpiles. Step away from the freak bike!
what advantage do you get from it ?
It's a bike so much quicker than walking.
Edit.
if it's a singlespeed one it isn't quicker than walking.
You can fit larger baskets on the front of 29ers for bread and groceries than on 26ers.
You sit higher, thus can look down on 26 inch wheel riders.
it makes your Knob bigger
You can tickle your dangleberries on the back tyre easier when hanging back over the saddle whilst doing a technical descent!
EDIT: 29er's don't do technical descents, sorry, silly me, I forgot! 😉
I have one. The pedals make it go and the brakes make it stop. It climbs better than my old bike, but that may be because it's a better bike.
I didn't get it because it was a 29er. I got it because it was a bike.
what advantage do you get from it ?
because if you are freak tall and thus need a garden gate of a frame the big wheels make your freak sizes look, in proportion terms, like everyone elses normal size bike (well from a distance anyhow)..
apart from that **** all difference i ride both a garden gate 29er and a 16" wheel Brompton... they all have to be pedalled..
what advantage do you get from it ?
As any fule know, bike speed is proportional to nicheness.
Now that single speeding is no longer niche (official government statistics on gear usage will soon confirm this), all those single speeders are, as a result, going no faster than regular bikes, and in some (rare) cases, actually slower.
Fortunately, help is at hand for the velocity-challenged - 29ers are still niche enough to offer a noticeable improvement in speed.
Of course, 650b is even faster than 29", for obvious reasons.
If you're a bloke and you register on Fitness Singles and mention in your profile that you ride a 29er, you will be inundated with replies from hot, fit babes wanting to meet you.
since i have owned a 29er I have found growing a beard to be easier and I now knit my own yoghurt and weave my own bread.
i am at one the with universe and its all to do with my shiny 29 inch rim
voodoo_chile,
I hope that these helpful replies have put your mind at rest and clarified a number of issues.
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to post them. Somebody will be along in due course to answer them too.
😀 😀
They're only for giants.
And clowns.
Clearly, it's better if you're a giant clown then you can reaaly start to own the trails.
(looking forward to the promised bigger knob).
Welcome to Sarcasm Central!
Do a search and you can read all the arguments for and against.
Are 29ers the new Marin?
When you lean them up against a 26" wheeled bike, it makes the owner suddenly panic that their bike's wheels have shrunk slightly.
they give you a well deserved sense of superiority........
They make your smile 3" wider than if you ride an "ordinary" sized bike 😛

But I am naturally superior anyway, my choice of bike is just a physical manifestation of that quality! 😉 🙄
Rigid 29er 1 x 9 is a good niche to occupy.
Don't know about giants... is that what small people call us?
My rigid 29er Rohloff is more niche than your rigid 29er 1x9.
So there. 😛
Is there gonna be an official "sarky twa@t" test you've gotta pass before you can own a 29er-think there should be really.
Or is it just a natural reaction to constantly being asked stoopid questions?
Lightless night riding is the new niche btw-cos it just like reaaly puts me in touch with the trail maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan......
29ers are great because you can go into bike shops and see if they do your size if they do then you know your in good company
I also find 29er riders more friendly than your average small wheel user oh and they like to take the pi55 too
I also find 29er riders more friendly than your average small wheel
they have to be, everyone else thinks they're c**ts 😀
29er's i prefer the term xx1x cannot not be niche as my local very sad LBS has tubes shrader and presta on the shelf,,,
but they dont have 24" tubes,,, so is that going to be the next big (little) thing
i also seem to miss the latest trends as my 29er frame is not here yet
i think most of the "sarcy comments" are from 29er owners, lighten up chaps/esses it's just a bike
I also find 29er riders more friendly than your average small wheel
i'm not
ggrrrrrr rocketdog...... go get 'em Fido! 8)
i'm more likely to hump your leg
Rigid singlespeed drop bar monstercross is so where it's at right now.
Don't forget that, no matter how much faster you might be able to ride while you're out, with a 29er you've got an extra 3" of wheel to clean after each ride at either end.
Bang goes your free time.
Being a 29er owner, I have my butler wash my bike, and besides, she likes the extra 3 inches. 😉

But of course most 29er riders are such riding gods that we have 2 bikini-clad pit pixies to polish our wheels each lap and give our nipples a tweak if necessary...
It's a bit like that John Cleese (29er), Ronnie Barker (26 inch) and Ronnie Corbett sketch (BMX)... I'm upper class and I look down on him.....etc etc.
Of course... the penny farthing is the grand daddy of them all! God I think.
1.5" less than you think.

I do not, under any circumstances, want to see my usual 'pit pixie' in a bikini.
Nor do I imagine Wayne would want to wear one.
any advantage over technical terrain ?,any more stable going downhill ? or do we just spend more time cleaning them and talking "nicheness"

Yes, they roll better over lumps and bumps, hold their speed better and the newer ones don't feel much different to 26" wheels, handling wise.
They're lovely 🙂
thanks Dave ,I may need to try one of these oversized beasts!
TBH I thought this rolling better thing was a load of marketing tosh until I was out riding with a mate the other week. We were both on rigid SS, he was on a 26" wheel and I was on the 29er. (He is a much better, fitter rider than I am - git!!!) We hit this section of lumpy, bumpy, sloppy, brick strewn trail. It went on for maybe half a mile. Anyway, we were chatting away and got to the next road section which took us to the next bit of trail. Anyway, it was only then I realised he wasn't there. I spotted his light maybe 2/3 down the trail. He said he just couldn't get the bike going on this sort of stuff and some of the bigger bits kept stopping him. It seems the 29 inch wheels helped no end!
The few guys with whom I ride (and I hope they're not reading this as they're all of this parish) on Tues or Thurs evenings think I'm quick on the rocky decents!
Erhmmm. It's the bike & nothing to do with my personal trail skills, which are at best, average!
(checks nipples to see that they are indeed, nice and polished - the 29er effect!)
I may need to try one of these oversized beasts!
Why not try a 29er when you've finished on the beast.
Since buying a 29er I have become immortal & can fire lightning bolts out of my ar5e...............
