I have sorted out a new, well second hand enduro bike for my lads birthday - he has some money to spare and wants to get a dirt jumper or something for the pump tracks. Not sure how long he will keep it but he wants to give it a try. Budget wise we have about £180 so I know this is going to be older, I have seen some mafia bikes around this prices range but I think he wants some front suspension.
im looking at all the usual places but for the money im able to spend doesnt seem a lot available other than the Mafia. What are people’s thoughts on these?

No idea about the Mafia bikes dirt jumper but I do seem to remember their BMX bikes being slated for quality/weight/durability. That was a long time go mind you.

There's a 2008 DMR Drone on Pinkbike for £150, but I think you'd probably be looking at closer to £300 or £400 for something decent (still used). I'd suggest either saving up, or spending the £180 on a decent used frame and building the bike up over time from used eBay/Pinkbike bargains.

FFIW, when I had a DJ bike I swapped the suspension fork for rigid as all they do is take a bit of sting out of the landings, at the expense of being like an anchor at the front of the bike.

i would say yes do it and when he has had enough you can inherit it, they are awesome fun

there are some cheap ones on pinkbike they are simple creatures and you don't need to speed thousands to have fun

I built one from a frame on here + parts. Thanks seriousrick 😀

26 parts are cheap, why not build one up from bits?

Think I paid about £150 for my eldest's Kona Stuff. Was originally a bit freeridey but its morphed over the years into a jump/pump track bike and to be fair, its a cracking little thing to play on.

I got a 26" BFe for £250 for doing this with, it's great.

I spent a load more on decent wheels and brakes and things, it's more for things like those new trails at GT than pump tracks but the original spec was perfectly serviceable

Still struggling to land something at the moment - it seems I can get a 24” easy enough.

What would be the main differences other than the obvious - should I hold out to find a 26”?

My first DJ was a 24" (in my mid-late 20s!)...

They're easier to spin and manoeuvre in the air. Better for BMX type tricks and skatepark type stuff. The 26" bikes are bit more stable on flowy jump trails.

Where is it going to be used?

If it's for anything on dirt I'd go 26. For the trade off in manoeuvrability it's a much smoother ride on anything other than park or street.

Getting thrown around when you're trying to line up for a lip isn't a great feeling.

My advice is to try and get something with horizontal dropouts. I love my Sidekick, but get a fair bit of chain slap due to having to use a tensioner. It also looks a million times better with no chain retention device!

Also, parts like tyres, forks and rims are far more plentiful and cheaper.

Aye, in that case 26" will probably be better.

I'll still refer back to my original suggestion though, either save up around £300 - £400 or buy a used frame and build it up from used parts.

These would be ideal...

I've had both and it wouldn't bother me. If I found a really nice 24" for the right price I'd buy it.

You can still get tyres (which will never wear out anyway) and if they have suspension they use regular 26ers.

Thanks - not sure what this bit means "and if they have suspension they use regular 26ers."

I mean the suspension forks are for 26" wheels. I don't think there's ever been 24" specific DJ forks.

Marzocchi did the DStreet but that was it. Could even run pegs on those IIRC!
