At some point soon I’ll be upgrading my full susser so will be looking for a hardtail to bolt all of the kit onto. It’s 26” wheels and 160mm forks, straight steerer.

What should be on my shortlist?

Have a look at the Cotic BFE 26"

2nd Hand Slackline 631 26" if you can find one. I run one with a 150mm 650b fork on it which gives the same A2C as a 160mm 26" fork. 44mm headtube so will take straight or tapered steerer with the correct headset

1st gen Switchback FTMFW.

They're technically 650B but I'd be jolly surprised if it wasn't actually meant for 26" in the first place... Here's mine with 26" wheels and its trailly 140mm 34s in, I've got some 160mm coil 36s for when I use it for DH racy stuff 🙂 44mm headtube so it can do straight or tapered.

It's the best bike I've ever owned, ever. Ever.
