Wadda do we reckon to these muppets? 🙄

Incident 67 - Tuesday 24th July 2018, 17:54hrs

As team members were settling down to their evening meal we were passed an incident that had initially been tasked to Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team. A pair of mountain bikers had left their vehicle in Penistone to cycle a route over Bleaklow that they had downloaded from an internet site. Unfortunately this gave them nothing more than 'a bread-crumb' type trail to follow and neither had any other way to navigate their chosen route. To compound problems further both had set off with very limited water and, given the current temperatures, they were soon suffering in the heat and called for assistance.
Luckily we were able to use phone finding software to pin point their location on the Cut Gate track North East of Sandy Lee and, because of concern for their wellbeing, a full team call out was initiated. Both cyclists were soon located, given glucose and rehydrated. Luckier still Woodhead Team very kindly volunteered to send one of their vehicles round to Fairholmes car park to pick up our cyclists and ferry them back round to their car (further saving them a hefty taxi fair!)

I think them mentioning:

Says a lot about what they think caused the issue. Rather silly thing to do if they're not familiar with the area.

Point isn't that they were lost but that they were suffering from lack of water/nourishment which is equally as stupid as being lost on a track that is impossible to get lost on.

EDIT they probably were lost but more concerned that they were suffering big style.

Shouldn't the title to this thread read - 2 people who have mountain bikes...

@onzadog :0)

my thought too

bleaklow is the next one over to the west, so presumably they were considering cutgate and back via doctors gate.

a big undertaking even with 3 litres of water and food supplies each

Nah should follow the normal headlines when people crash cars.

Two mountain bikes got into difficulty.

Why didn't they just follow the same way back if they were lost? I'm sure it takes several days to die from lack of water and longer still without food. They obviously just panicked as they weren't familiar with the locale. Mandatory donation for stupidity? 😆

I would choose not to call people 'muppets' unless I had a access to a bit more information. That said, anyone who chooses to ride over Doctor's Gate needs help regardless 🙂

define MTBers.

Are people who find themselves half way up a mountian in flip flops hill walkers? Idiots will still be idiots, regardless of their chosen form of transport.

In this heat I think youd be in trouble in a few hours not days .

Whilst there is the 3 rule (3 hours in harsh weather, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food) the first of those three is rather important in this case. Couple of days without water is when you are doing minimal activity and sheltering as opposed to riding on a rather hot day.

Its a bit unclear what happened. It may have been they were fairly far in before realising they were in trouble and without a map etc couldnt plan an escape as opposed to being completely lost.
