[#10473932]

Bought a so called 2.5in Maxxis DHF (26in) in their recent sale. Looked small when I aired it up, felt small with a hand round it compared the the conti 2.4 on the back on a narrower rim.

Measures 2.2 exactly at 25psi across the casing on a flow EX. conti 2.4 on the Arch EX is a little over 2.3

I know it's on a smaller than ideal rim, but it shouldn't come up that small, should it?

Old 26" maxxis tyres were (and seemingly still are!) notoriously under-sized. The 2.3's were more like 2.1's. They did offer a 2.7 Minion DHF that was closer to 2.5, think they stopped that a long time ago though! 27.5 and 29 Maxxis tyres seem to be better in this regard, my 2.35 Forekasters come up very close to that on a 26mm ID rim and other Maxxis tyres I've used have been similarly close.

I looked at this this week. 2.4 dhr11 in 29 wt is smaller than a 2.35 hans dampf. The 2.5 wt dhf is the same size as a 2m35 hans Dampf.

This is on 25mm rims

You're .15 better off than me, though!

I'll just have to try and rag the shit out of it ASAP so I can get something a bit chunkier. Tricky when most of my trails are rooty and loamy.

Yes, long standing problem with sizing on 26" Maxxis however newer tyres on 29er are accurate to the stated millimetre, including the latest 2.6 WT Minions which are huge.
I used to use 2.5 Minions quite a lot, although they were smaller than the firm's 2.4 Advantage. They may not be a massive carcase but they still work well.

Also worth mentioning the wt 2.5 and 2.4 have worked fine on my 25mm rims. I was worried they would be too rounded out but they are less rounded than the 2.35 schwalbe.

newer tyres on 29er

Yup, I've got a 29x3 DHF which is 3.1 on a Hugo.

Yeah, 2.5in is "big enough" but definitely not 2.5, other brands at 2.25 came out about the same width.

That tyre is clearly made before maxxis recalibrated their ruler.

I used to use a 2.6 x 2.35 DHF on the back, it was nowhere near as big as 2.3 WTB on the front.

A "new" Maxxis 2.3 dwarfs the old 2.35 and the new 2.5 is really quite large!

Oddly enough I've just bought a 2.5 WT DHF and on a 25mm internal rim it looks pretty narrow, similar in size to the Magic Mary 2.35 it replaced.

Is it just the 26" tires that are undersized?
Does anyone happen to know how close the Maxxis 2.5 DHF/DHR2 WT in 27.5 is to 2.5 (i'll be using an iw29 rim) 😀

Check out review on front page, measures up 2.45 on Hunt wide trail rims. I've always found DHF tyres to be slightly undersized while the DHR2 seems to size up better (more accurate). Both are good tyres though.

They're still slightly under on 30mm rim IME- DHR2 in WT is a 2.4 or 2.6 by the way, not 2.5.

Don't get hung up on the width though, the WT tyres have a bigger, deeper tread which is more significant than the size difference.
